The Ugly TRUTH About Hetero Marriage: Born-Agains Divorce More Than Others
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 07:04 PM by stopbush
Check out this article from 2000 done by The Baptist Standard:

January 12, 2000

Baptist divorce rate higher than average

___"Born-again" Christians are more likely to go through a marital split than are non-Christians, according to a new study by the Barna Research Group.
___Using statistics drawn from a nationwide survey of nearly 4,000 adults, the Barna data show 11 percent of the adult population currently is divorced but that 25 percent of all adults have experienced at least one divorce.
___Among "born-again" Christians, 27 percent currently are divorced or previously have been divorced, compared with 24 percent among adults who are not "born again."
___Surprisingly, the Barna report said, the Christian group whose adherents have the highest likelihood of getting divorced are Baptists. The only group to surpass Baptists were Christians associated with non-denominational Protestant churches.

Story here: http://www.baptiststandard.com/2000/1_12/pages/divorce.html

And, roughly 43% of American marriages end in divorce.

What was that bush uttered last might about the "sanctity" of marriage?

1. Bush wants government to sanctify marriage
...and that will involve putting big money in the pockets of Baptists.

2. I wonder, if in those marriages, one member went 'born again', and
the other did not. That would explain quite a bit here.

3. I mentioned this on Malloy one night.
Part of the problem is that Fundie churches tend to aggregate in the south, and southerners are bad about marrying too young, which increases the odds for divorce.

7. personal theory
Born Agains tend to "put God and church first" (I've actually heard this, a lot). They also tend to leave their relationship "in the hands of the Lord."

Atheists tend to just focus on the problem at hand.

So, knowing that relationships need a lot of attention and tending, which relationships are going to get the work they need?

Note: Gross generalisations all over the preceding.

8. As Bill Maher eloquently puts it...
Marriage is and always has been a polite word for people selling sex for money. (also sometimes sex for power, which = money)

9. no suprises, but born again christians get you laid!
fooling born again christians is a great way to get laid, as the poor folks are desperately short of shagging experience.

Just go to a bible thump, and act the part of a believer... and by the end of the evening, pick the most sexy partner and shag their brains out. Every time they bring up the bible, just say that you love jesus and get back to shagging.

It worked a charm in college. The poor folks are so caught up in their dogma, with so little real-life balance experience, that anyone with a little street-wise savvy can wind them up no problemo.

I admit it was boring sex, but in texas, the choices are a bit thin.... and i was horny. :)

10. Maybe their premarital sex view is at fault
I don't know how many really do stay virgins until they get married or feel obligated to get married because they had sex. Such people tend to marry quicker and strangely are overly fixated on sex. I think the premarital virgins may be disappointed when they actually do have sex. Marrying after knowing each other only a short time increases these odds. Of course the teenage couple that feels obligated to marry because they had sex, usually finds that nothing gets better and they don't want to be trapped after a few years.

11. marriage is about tolerance and maturity
none of which we learn anymore in american culture. Kids grow up to be mega-selfish, and it leads to poor ground for a mature anything.

Marriage, as i've come to know it, is really beautiful, not for the hot sex, but for intimacy, trust and love... all of these, to be honest, i could share with most any partner who had the temperment of extreme maturity and tolerance of my whackiness.

Fundie christians talk that talk, but obviously have no experience of walking the walk on tolerance and maturity. Sex is part of marriage to be sure, but if your physical body is the basis for your love, you've short changed yourself. I agree that the lack of experience, and immaturity leads to false positives and bad choices.

12. I've said before,
It's very hard to walk a very tight line.

One of the reasons that England's restoration fell as quickly and as far as it did when it fell was that human beings grow rapidly tired of behaving in Puritanical ways.

14. Compare their ministers divorces too
I bet money their ministers have even more divorces than their laity.
I bet money their ministers have WAY more divorces than the ministers of mainstream denominations.

16. Well, lets hear about the "beautiful truth" of homoerotic marriage....

:eyes:
But the whole subject is really a joke. Marriage and its whole underpinning--a contract relationship-- is a pathetic joke played on unwitting fools who think the contract makes all else history.

I once discussed "non-marital sex" with a fundie fuckhead and he tried to correct me and call it "pre-marital". I said: "No. I mean non-marital--I have no intentions of getting married I just like fucking".

I think he and his friends labeled me Satan or something.

Then I started talking about changing the Constitution from freedom "of" religion to freedom from "from" religion--religion free zones like free speech zones that our fascist dictators enjoy.

How this specie gets caught up in its stupid little rituals is beyond me. :eyes:
