West Point turns to private security

Private guards will replace soldiers at the gates of the U.S. Military Academy. The change, due to take place in May, is part of a broader effort by the Army to free up National Guard members who have provided added security at West Point and other Army bases since shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, West Point spokesman Maj. Kent Cassella said yesterday. West Points Military Police Company's duties will not be affected by the change. The contract for guarding the post was awarded to Alitiiq-Wankenhut, a partnership of an Alaskan-owned company and Wackenhut, one of the country's biggest private security companies. Army-issue M-16 and M-4 rifles will be replaced with pistols and shotguns.

I can't decide what is more disgusting: the almost religious devotion to privitization by the current junta or the giant sucking sound of our entire reserve/NG into elective wars.
