GOP spying on Democrats
Edited on Fri Jan-23-04 03:35 PM by Skinner
Infiltration of files seen as extensive Senate panel's GOP staff pried on Democrats By Charlie Savage, Globe Staff, 1/22/2004

This makes Memogate look like

WASHINGTON -- Republican staff members of the US Senate Judiciary Commitee infiltrated opposition computer files for a year, monitoring secret strategy memos and periodically passing on copies to the media, Senate officials told The Globe.

From the spring of 2002 until at least April 2003, members of the GOP committee staff exploited a computer glitch that allowed them to access restricted Democratic communications without a password. Trolling through hundreds of memos, they were able to read talking points and accounts of private meetings discussing which judicial nominees Democrats would fight -- and with what tactics.

The office of Senate Sergeant-at-Arms William Pickle has already launched an investigation into how excerpts from 15 Democratic memos showed up in the pages of the conservative-leaning newspapers and were posted to a website last November.

With the help of forensic computer experts from General Dynamics and the US Secret Service, his office has interviewed about 120 people to date and seized more than half a dozen computers -- including four Judiciary servers, one server from the office of Senate majority leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, and several desktop hard drives.

It's more fun now that the media are RW sluts. Who needs slime like Liddy when nobodies gonna prosecute nobody. Why did we fight Communism?

3. How ironic that one of the suspects name is Miranda!
He had his defense strategy down pretty quick, don't you think? 'Nothing illegal, nothing to see here, no stealing, no hacking, no property rights, blah, blah....' I love the-'we told them about it and they did nothing to fix it' defense. Losers.

4. The corruption is thoughtout the system
This is major. The repugs are out of control. They have no idea how to lead, all they know how to do is to cheat. This is truly the beginning of the end for Bu$hCo and their minions. Everyone who participated in this felony should resign immediately.

6. Shameful...
Really shameful, although I'm not sure we can stick them for it. Looking at un-protected files is probably not illegal. Again, its shameful, but maybe not breaking the law, dunno.

I have to admit that the contents of the memos are almost more apalling than the peeking. Calling Estrada 'especially dangerous because he is latino' is beyond defensible. It goes against everything our party stands for. Dr. King would roll over in his grave if he heard a group of lawmakers scheming like that.

I'm disgusted with everyone on this one.

Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 04:39 PM by nannygoat
And even if I don't, I certainly don't read the rest of it the same way you do. * and his minions WERE pandering to Latinos in nominating Estrada. I'm sure that Dems meant by the quote "especially dangerous, because . . . he is Latino," is exactly what is explained in the rest of the sentence, that they feared it "would make him difficult to block".

Miguel Estrada is a right-wing freak who assisted in the coup d' etat which allowed the unelected fraud moron to occupy the White House. Blocking that traitor from a judgeship was the only thing Dems could do.

10. Oh get off it...
... you know damn well what that statement meant but in case you don't here goes....

"Since he is Latino, we will claim their opposition to him is racial, even though we know it is not".

Don't EVEN try to characterize that statement as racist.

19. nice try
why didn't they just come out and say it then? Why did they not block other nominees who has similar views as Estrada? The fact is that race was indeed part of the fillibuster which is beyond the pale. Its disgraceful and really illustrates why both major parties are more concerned with politics than ideals.

27. Nope, don't agree
Nobody plays the all-out fraud game like the Republican side (your side?). Every group of people has bad apples, but the Republicans in power are working in concert to win by any means, most of them foul, and are rendering the concepts of the rule of law and fair play null and void.

The "both sides play this game" argument is a way to neutralize criticism.

My question to you is this: Even if you were right that both sides play this game, would that make cheating on a huge scale acceptable?

I seem to recall that the Cons use the "Clinton did/said it, too" defense quite a bit when they're found to be up to their necks in some kind of shit. And somehow that argument is meant to make the shit smell like flowers.

33. Not Like the Whiney Republicans
It is because the party tends to be very malicious, covetous, and it certainly has no sense of fair play. They have become so detached from the Constitution and every tenet this country was founded upon. It is so obvious they care NOTHING about America or any of the "Christian" principles they so strongly exhort they believe in.

Edited on Fri Jan-23-04 08:23 AM by Q
...you need only to look at their fearless leader to see this is true.

- Would the GOPers have found anything to steal if they hadn't been looking? This is the way the RWingers have operated for decades. They spy, bug offices and dig up dirt on the opponents because they simply can't win on the issues.
