Last minute rider on spending bill-gun pruchase records gone in 24 hours
Anyone see this last night?

I can't find an article about the spending bill that includes details of this. ABC WNT reported on it last night but there is nothing posted on their website or on ABC News.

Apparently this was added at the last minute and no one saw it. Records of gun purchases now are to be erased after 24 hours instead of the 90 days they are currently kept for.

1. No
But honestly, as a gun owner & 2nd Amendment advocate, I really don't see the need in this. A 90 day retention period is more than reasonable and shouldn't place an excessive burden of recordkeeping on FFL sellers.

2. Apparently that is what law enforcement is saying too
They had the head of NYC police saying that he couldn't believe that this was done.

The new law takes effect at the end of next month.

4. I saw the report too. Law enforcement officials are mad!
That 90 day paper trail was useful in helping law enforcement track people who weren't suppose to have guns. There was a tobacco and firearms guy on talking about how irresponsible this peice of legislation was.

3. a total NRA giveaway
The previous law allowed the FBI to review gun sales records within 6 months of purchase. This would allow them to check the sales against known terrorist lists and updated law enforcement records (for instance, if someone was arrested for spousal abuse and released on bail, he/she could often purchase a gun the same afternoon before the arrest appeared in the system).

The FBI confiscates over 200 guns a year from violent criminals who shouldn't have been allowed to purchase the firearm in the first place. Now, with the records destroyed in 24 hours, these felons will keep their guns. Comforting, isn't it?

The NRA natters on about law-abiding citizens and enforcing the laws to keep guns out of the hands of felons, then we see their true side with this law. It's nauseating.
