The asshole Chris Matthews at the beginning of his show said that. What a f---ing jerk. Is this what its going to come to? And just what in the hell makes the sofa clothed women so great?

but not as first lady because she's got a career?

Anyway, totally ridiculous to be measuring a presidential candidate based on THAT!

57. Was Chris talking about "Stepford Laura?"
I don't have anything against someone so out of it to have chosen GW for a husband, but please, Laura is not the most "brilliant" First Lady we have had. Lady Bird was even better than Laura. She is just plain dull and a perfect intellecutal and emotional match for GW.

2. any of our first lady candidates
are fabulous. This is something I don't think any of us can disagree on. Mrs. Kerry, Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Dean, Mrs. Lieberman, Mrs. Sharpton (Kucinich is a bachelor)are strong, independent minded women who bring great strength to their mates.

That is so totally cool. Mrs. Edwards is an attorney and we know there are two "Dr. Dean's." I'm not sure about the others, but hey, they're all great and not in a drug induced stupor.

on edit: I was going to say something snarky about a certain auto accident, but nah.... I'll just do what the repukes do and leave it at inuendo.

44. Ditto! I am very impressed with the wives I've listened to- all excellent!
It's time to make a list of all the pugs attacks (yes, Matthews is a pug).

It's necessary to start early to counter the crap that came out against Gore - big neck, funny shirts, and the lies about lying.

Dems are getting good at not taking crap. Awareness is the best anti-crap antidote.

Watch the media - especially Matthews - he's like an open book. Make a list and counter it.

I'm not for Leiberman or Kerry - but I think their wives are outstanding.

And don't take any crap about Kucinich not being married. The number of singles in the country is a growing phenonema. There is nothing wrong with singleness. (Who wants to raise a kid that leaders and teachers lie to about this country being for the people, by the people, and of the people?)

I know they have admitted it is a LIE and that Bush* didn't really write any poem but someone did and that someone considers her to be "That Lump in the Bed" and right-wingers think it was cute. A lot of "Dignity and Honor" shown there. You are supposed to "Honor" your wife not belittle her. I am quite curious who actually wrote those words because it is very telling of the mind-set around there.

26. What is marriage?
Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 11:08 AM by Toots
To me it is a Union. When two become one. If they stay two then it is hardly a Union Granted they need to have their own identities but I believe for legal reasons they should unite under one name. It doesn't have to be the man's name but they should agree on one name for their family. just my $.02 worth Why don't the children have both their mothers and fathers last name? Because there is in this country a tradition of having one "family name".

39. I don't understand why a woman should give up a name
she's had all along. I did not change my last name when I got married. My two sons have their father's last name as theirs.

And the notion that everyone in the family should have the same last name doesn't hold up when so many people divorce and remarry, and if there are kids involved, SOMEONE is going to have a different last name.

Changing the name is not what makes the marriage strong. We've lasted 23 years so far, which is longer than a lot of women I know who've been married multiple times and who always change their last name.

I've always been more than a little disappointed that Hillary Rodham knuckled under to the pressure to use Clinton as her last name to further Bill's political career.

I kept my name when we got married. Some of my in-laws have never gotten over it but that's too bad.
I do regret that my son's don't have my last name, my hubby's last name is an extremely common name while mine is not. My son's do have my name as one of their middle names so they can legally use it if they want when they get older.

24.  Matthews is the absolute worst - the bottom of the sewer.
IMO, he is the biggest POS on the tube. He is beyond contempt. Did you see him "interviewing" Trippi after Iowa and really giving it to him about Dean's family - he kept hitting on and hitting on it. Then when he got away from the interview he laughed to fellow sadistic guests - "Ha HA - I really punched him around!"
Remember, Clark, Edwards and Kerry people- he will do the same thing to your guys.
I don't think politics should be treated in the smart ass, sophomoric way. Its too serious.

She's a practicing doctor and very intelligent and seems so nice.

If Dean is elected, she wouldn't just stump for her husband and be a puppet. Nor would she just decorate the White House. She said she would move her practice to D.C. and continue her work. So yes, Chris Matthews, we have a strong first lady. A strong, devoted one.

58. Laura Bush has been the most invented woman ever to assume the
title of first lady. She is totally dumb as a box of sandworms. or maybe even the sandworms are more alert and intelligent.

She has offerend no inspiration and is, obviously, a weak woman who latched onto wealth and who is doing as she is told. There is nothing that she has done with her life for the past thirty years.

She is, pathetic and is just dumbly numbly performing her "duties" as ordered by her master. If she does not, she will not be able to latch on to all the perps that come with her "first lady" status. That is she will not be able to "eat and shop" in foreign countries on someone else's money. Ours to be exact.

I like all of the Democratic women--all of them. Strong women--I particularly like Judy Dean. There is no pretense there. No cardboard, Texas, made up with paste eye lifts and makeup to cover for the lack of intelligence and ability to engage.

67. I saw Wes Clark's wife speak yesterday and she is cool!
Nice looking, respectful, down to earth, smart woman. Reminds me of my Texas yellow dog Democrat Aunt - very well spoken and out spoken.

Also, Kerry's wife - the wife of the late Sen. John Heintz (R). Now there's a First Lady the press would love because of her life's history.
