Did Bush Make Pass At Canadian Male Political Aide?
(Ottawa) Details are emerging about a strange meeting involving US President George W. Bush and a senior aide to Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin.

...

It was Reid's job to brief Martin prior to a press conference Martin and Bush were about to give. As the Prime Minister spoke with his aide, Bush wandered over to introduce himself.

...

"Well, what do you do for this guy?" the President asked as he pointed to the Prime Minister.

"Well, you know, sir, I can't really say," Reid said. "It's not that I don't want to. It's just that, you know, I don't really know from day to day."

Reid is known as a "fixer" handing a number of sensitive issues in the Prime Minister's Office.

The President chuckled. "Well, you got a pretty face," he told the surprised Reid.

And, the president wasn't done. "You got a pretty face," he said again. "You're a good-looking guy. Better looking than my Scott anyway."

The other Scott is Scott McClellan, Bush's press secretary.

6. He said something strange to that pandering Brit Hume along these lines
Remember when Hume was asking Bush how he gets his news, and he said that he only gets summaries from aides? Here's the Faux official transcript--

HUME: How do you get your news?

BUSH: I get briefed by Andy Card and Condi in the morning. They come in and tell me. In all due respect, you've got a beautiful face and everything.

Brit thought this was awfully funny and dutifully guffawed, but George didn't crack a smile . . .

9. Wow, strange...
I can assume that he meant that Hume is a "good" newsanchor because he's telegenic. That's the only sane-seeming explanation, though of course it's strange to say he is telegenic, because he is not. But "beautiful face" is an interesting term to use.

and besides it was just a pass,

and besides, whatever else happens, he wouldn't marry the aide,

and besides, even if he married the aide, it would be in Canada, so marriage would still be 'sacred and safe' in the U.S.

13. What is *that* all about?
Perhaps the rumors about Bush* and Ashe are true. Bob Stevens, who was anthraxed, supposedly had some revealing pictures of our chimp-in-chief and perhaps that's why he was whacked.

Didn't someone just purchase that building where the first Anthrax attack took place?

25. It's finally being cleaned
It's been sealed since the Anthrax attacks, but is finally being cleaned by a biological-cleanup company and Rudy Giuliani's consulting company.

From City Link: "At a photo op last week, Giuliani and executives from Sabre Technical Services announced that the former offices of The National Enquirer and Star tabloids will house research labs, offices and demonstrations of anthrax-fighting tools. It's unclear, though, if there's a huge demand for these services."

Unless you have gay sex photos of the President or you are a member of the Democratic leadership, I guess.

Although I did know a Freeper wingnut back in the 90's who was convinced that the Bush family was in on an international kidnapping ring that abducted young boys from Latin America to be used as sex slaves- but this was before the Bushes became conservatives.

34. Anybody see Dateline on Friday night? The show was about
underage sex slaves and prostitution in Thailand and Cambodia. It was absolutely disgusting how these young children (mostly girls) are enslaved as prostitutes. They showed girls as young as 5 who were forced to have sex with sicko Americans and Europeans. They also mentioned that there is a new law aimed at Americans who go over to those countries and get caught having sex with children. I was thinking, since Neil * admitted having sex with young girls overseas (can't remember exactly where) while under oath during his divorce proceedings, shouldn't he be one of the first ones arrested? Maybe they'll catch him on one of his future trips...

Disgusting repuke PIG.

24. those who cannot make small talk
... should shut up -- the gist of someone's remarks about this idiocy of Bush's. I think that's really it: he just doesn't have the gift of talking easily to people. Of course, that's often indicative of (a) stupidity and/or (b) complete self-absorption.

It can be disastrous for people in public life, if anybody bothers to notice or bring it to public attention.

I remember a canvasser in a local NDP campaign here a few years back, open-mouthed at an incident while she was door-knocking with the candidate. He'd recently taking up running of the non-political kind, and one campaign photo featured him running a marathon in his "I'm running for office" T-shirt. They came up to a door in an apt. building, and he spotted some spiffy track shoes on the mat outside it, and picked one up to examine it as the canvasser knocked. Woman answers door. Candidate: "Are these your shoes?" Voter: "No, they're my son's." Candidate, continuing to examine shoes: "Oh, is he a runner?" Woman: "Who the hell are you and what do you want?" The canvasser could only ask: "What was in his mind??"

Moral of both stories: if you can't think of something intelligent to say, bite your tongue and smile.

40. heh
Actually, I'd heard/read someone else (maybe even here at DU) make that comment -- those who can't make small talk shouldn't -- and it reflected exactly what I thought. I know from experience; I've certainly said some dumb things when trying to chit-chat cold, I must say. ;) Whoever I read may well have been consciously or unconsciously quoting Jane. I didn't know I'd come quite so close back (bite your tongue) to the mistress's own admonition!

I was fortunate to come to Jane Austen very late in life so I still have much of the pleasure left -- and so far have actually only read Persuasion, after seeing the movie. The movie was awful; the best part was looking at the places I'd visited in Bath, all dolled up in 18th century spendour. I went with a very Janeite buddy -- a middle-aged, Cambridge-educated effete sort of white Jamaican. For the first 20 minutes he kept telling me what was going on. Then there was silence for a while. Finally, having had no luck following the proceedings, I said something like "who the hell is that?" "I dunno," he replied; "I didn't read that far."

Anyhow, Bush should probably learn what Jane meant when she said that someone was "condescending", which she meant as a good thing. As Dr. Johnson had put it a few years earlier in his Dictionary, to condescend was to "depart voluntarily from the privileges of superiority; sink willingly to equal terms with inferiors" -- or the first part of Oxford's definition, "behave as if one is on equal terms with" a person, without the "while maintaining an overt attitude of superiority".

If yer gonna engage in small talk with an "inferior", commenting on his pretty face is pretty much condescending in a bad way, besides being really dumb.

19. Did Bush mistake him for Scott Brison?
Brison's a cabinet member who's openly gay. I'm wondering if Bush assumed this was the Scott he'd heard about -- I can just see Rove snickering "oh, that Martin's got a gay guy named Scott working for him, hahaha" -- and Bush decided to have a little fun by taunting him.

This is only supposition on my part, BUT Bush has been known to needle gays before (e.g. right on the floor of the Texas Legislature) -- plus he loves making it look like he's "in the know" about sensitive background issues. His first meeting with Jean Chretien, he blurted out an apparent inanity about going fishing with him someday, and smirked. Chretien was uncomfortable because he'd criticized Brian Mulroney about all his fishing trips, buddy-buddy with George's dad. People up here suspected that Mulroney had fed him that info (the families apparently socialize together ... Poppy and Bar were guests of honour at Mulroney's daughter's wedding).

News flash to Dubya -- Scott Brison being gay is NOT a sensitive issue in Canada -- so puerile jokes just make you look like a fool. And I happen to know, from someone who used to work for Paul Martin, that he's protective of his employees ... he doesn't think it's funny when outsiders try to embarrass them ... keep doing that, Mr. Bush, and the chill in the air at your upcoming state visit won't be due to a passing frontal system.

30. another way of doing the story perhaps

Bush 'bisexual' claim denied by spokesman

27 January 2004
By I.M. Fishy

Scott McClellan, Bush's press secretary, today dismissed as lies reports that George Bush had made a pass at a strikingly handsome male aide of Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin.

The alleged incident happened following a breakfast between Bush and Martin at the recent summit in Monterrey, Mexico. As the two leaders discussed issues dividing the countries, Scott Reid, Martin's senior strategist was called in.

According to an unnamed source who was also present at the meeting, Bush wandered over to introduce himself to Scott Reid. After asking about the 35 year olds position within the Canadian government, Bush is alleged to have said to the surprised Reid, "Well, you got a pretty face". Bush is then supposed to have continued "You're a good-looking guy. Better looking than my Scott anyway," referring to the White House spokesman.

"I didn't know what to say," Reid is alleged to have later told reporters.

Scott McClellan, Bush's press secretary strongly denounced as lies the reports about the alleged conversation. "These are lies spread by certain elements within American society whose sole aim is to remove Bush from the Presidency by any means what so ever." He added "George Bush is involved a long and very happy monogamous relationship with his wife that has given birth to two beautiful children, and baseless accusations like this are just an indication of how low the other side will sink."

"Vibrant? Does that mean he likes...y'know...flowers?"

"Err...I'm not that intimate with his personal life..."

"Heh, heh...leave that to me...I mean...okay! Thanks, Paulie! See ya next month. Gotta go...God told me that I got a Crusade to lead...and flowers to get...do ya think he'd like a nick name? Hmmm. Scottie Violets? Hell! I'll think of somethin'...(click)..."
