OTTAWA - NDP Leader Jack Layton says Trade Minister Jim Peterson's praise of former prime minister Brian Mulroney in a recent interview with the National Post is further proof that Prime Minister Paul Martin is moving Canada to the right.
In an interview with the National Post's Diane Francis at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Peterson praised Mulroney for entering Canada into free trade agreements with the U.S.
"We have one of the best stories around," Peterson said. "We're global. Right now, there is $100-billion more invested by Canadians abroad than is invested by foreigners in Canada. What did it was free trade and I credit Brian Mulroney with this. He deserves the credit of all Canadians."
In an interview with PoliticsWatch, Layton said he wasn't surprised by the comments.
"This is more proof that Paul Martin is taking the Liberal Party away from any kind of a balanced view and over toward this notion that whatever's good for the corporations is good for Canada," he said. "And it turns out that this is not true."
