Dixie Chicks were wonderful in Houston tonight.
It was an impressive concert. The stage was ingenious for a large arena. The sound system was great, not too loud, but loud enough to get over crowd noise and clear.
Before the concert they played a variety of songs. It was only after I heard a few I noticed a humorous theme to the selections. I can’t remember them all, but I recall “Band on the Run” and “Thank you for letting me be myself”.
We even had a touch of Jersey right before the Chicks appeared. Springsteen’s “Born in the USA”
It wasn’t until midway through the concert the Natalie talked about “the incident”. Someone had a sign that said “Maines in 2004”. She quipped she didn’t want to be President, but perhaps FCC chairperson.
The crowd seemed fine except one guy. Lucky for me he was in the row behind me. He screamed “Shut up and sing!” He had a kid with him, a girl about 8 years old who then parroted the phrase. Best I could do was give him the “What an A**hole!” look.
They sang “Truth No. 2” with a video collage of all kinds of people demonstrating; civil rights, woman’s suffrage, gay rights, million man march, Beatle records being burned, and of course stomping on Dixie Chick CDs. It was inspiring, and I hope it ruffled some feathers.
I’m happy to say the Bozo behind me left shortly thereafter. I suspect he was someone who bought his ticket ahead of “the incident” but was too cheap to protest by staying home.
I don’t think many stayed away. We guessed maybe a hundred or so empty seats although I couldn’t see the upper deck that well. The concert was officially “sold out”.
These women were terrific performers. Natalie said, “They told us that in Houston people would not support us, but we knew our fans would be here.”
Anyone in the remaining cities should find a Republican with tickets and see the show.
