So does anyone see the extreme contradiction in CBS' position
between the JJ boob incident and CBS' refusal to run the Bush in 30 Seconds ad??

According to Drudge:

"Top CBS executives approved a musical skit where Janet Jackson would expose her breast during the MTV-produced Super Bowl half-time concert, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

"The decision to go forward went to the very top of the network," a well-placed source explained from New York. "

http://www.drudgereport.com/mattjj.htm

BUT...

CBS wouldn't run an ad showing children doing adult work to pay off Bush's huge debt.

Now, what's wrong with this picture? Does CBS prefer showing boobs to pointing out a how a failed, financially irresponsible "president" is destroying our country at the expense of our children?

I guess so.

1. Not a good argument. CBS doesn't air "position ads" during the Superbowl.
Period.

The boob thing was not a position ad. They have nothing to do with each other.

6. Agreed
I love MoveOn.Org, but putting Issue ads on the SuperBowl would opened a Pandora's box. Can you think of seeing several Bush/Cheney-04 ads during the Superbowl, bankrolled by the $200 Million war chest they have - ugh.

7. Well, they have rules and they adhered to them. They have the right to do
that...

I don't agree, but I'm not running the network.

9. I guess you're right
Everyone from the NRA to Family Values Coalition would have an ad if it was allowed.

And I also like what someone said below about people probably being to sloshed to pay much attention anyway and it would be a waste of a good $2.3 million.

Anyway, the whole thing kinda seemed not quite right, but there's some valid points here.

13. Did you completely miss those anti-drug commercials?
Non-pharmaceutical drugs, anyway? Just asking.

18. How were those position ads? They were PSAs...
I KNOW there's a bunch of people that take issue with them, but there is a discernable difference. PSA good, position ad bad.

I don't agree, but I don't run CBS.

14. Yeah before you know it bush* will be spending taxpayer money
on ads linking drug use with terrorism!

What?

They ran that during last years Superbowl?

Well, I guess "CBS doesn't air "position ads" during the Superbowl. Period" is a pretty silly position then, huh.

2. too much is being made of the boob
it wasn't even a fully nude boob, it had a pastie, big deal. If your kids havn't seen a boob by the time they can hold their head up to watch football, they are repressed.

It's time we grew up in this country and stopped having a fit everytime someone says 'fuck' or shows a little skin.

More should be made of CBS's refusal to run the MoveOn ads while allowing the blatant propaganda ads blaming all of life's troubles on pot

3. I agree...... I don't get the whole MoveOn ad fury
Edited on Mon Feb-02-04 07:01 PM by EllieDem
maybe because I used to have a boyfriend in advertising and I know how these things work. The superbowl is not the place for such downer ads (even truthful ones). I can totally see their position in not airing it. And what surprises me is MoveOn even wanting to air it at that time. Like I said earlier 90% of the audience is probably so plastered by the time it would run anyway. A Complete waste of 2.3 million IMO

4. Geez, NOT a pastie. A nipple shield that was more nipple than shield.
THAT's the issue...an exposed nipple.

Overall, I'm not especially opposed to this, but we DO have rules and CBS DID break them. Don't like the rules? Change 'em. Until then, CBS should be held accountable.

8. can I get a big amen to that
it's either michael jackson, janet jackson, scott peterson, and anything else the media can do to keep the real issues out of sight. I would agree that "Childs' Pay" would have been a waste of money during the sb, better to air that monday thru friday 6 - 8 pm.

10. You miss the point about this stuff
these celebritity "scandals" are what people want to see. The media is just giving the idiot masses what they want. Your average american is bored stiff by politics and social issues.

20. The flatulent horse was more disgusting
(albeit, funnier, too!).

Yet it passed CBS's "smell test".

So, why isn't the media talking about the horror of the farting horse?
