Time to punish Viacom
We have learned since the Super Bowl that TIVO is used by the Neilson ratings. Anyone with a TIVO should boycott CBS at least when using TIVO. If you are picked to be a Neilson family, you should boycott CBS. If we can get a grass roots effort going, we could actually punish Viacom where it hurts for censoring the anti bush crowd.

1. It helps that CBS is pretty consistantly crummy
I haven't watched a CBS show in a long time. Now NBC ("The West Wing") or Fox ("The Simpsons" or "24") would be tougher.

Except I watch USA for Monk.

What are the party affiliations of Sci Fi and USA?

2. Don't Make It A Blockbuster Night
Viacom owns your local video store...not bad, they produce the slime, package it, market it, air it then resell it to you. I've been boycotting Blockbuster since Redstone & Corp bought it up...besides the limited, approved selections on the shelves (don't dare look for something with substance without really digging), there's the minimum wage kids more interested in talking on the phone than making proper change.

Also, let's clear up the ratings thing. The main TV ratings...the Neilsens for CBS are virtually all based on the numbers generated by the network's Over The Air signals...meaning the stations with the W or K on them...and this is done through selected families who have monitoring equipment put on their sets to see what they're watching. Now, if you have one of these boxes (and those that do are "sworn to secrecy") it'd be nice if you left the box on your local PBS channel and give them the credit. For everyone else, just note who advertises on CBS programs...or find out more about www.viacom.com...look around, see what they own and go from there. Some cable systems do monitor your viewing as well...but that's only to the box on-top of your set. If you can watch CBS or any other channel you want to spy in on directly to your set, avoiding the box, you've made another end run.

Our media is a huge monster...with its financial grubbies into a lot of our lives, and to shun one part while kissing the other is self-defeating. Knowing about these companies will help you judge your buying and viewing habits accordingly. And it's the American way!
