2. While cutting defense a measley amount is a factor

another is Stopping Corperations from using tax shelters
and end all the loopholes that allow for the super rich
to escape paying their fair share is a most important factor.

After watching Bill Moyers tonight , the middle class
is subsidizing the rich . This will kill the economic
base of the nation .

3. means test...

.....medicare and social security.

We means test everything else. Welfare, food stamps, student loans, housing assistance, yadda yadda.

Means test the entitlements.

People with more than a million dollars in assets (excluding home and small business) shouldn't be getting free medical care on the backs of middle income America.

People with the same shouldn't be getting retirement income from generations yet unborn.

Just means test, then pay a lump sum equal to the pay-in plus interest for those who are too rich to qualify for SSA or Medicare.

All that hundreds of billions of dollars saved can be invested in jobs projects and other needs.

4. Spread more wealth down to the middle/working class, and

not only do you have fewer social needs, but you have a bigger overall economy because more people will be able to participate in it effectively and efficiently.

Equality of opportunity on a level playing field, tearing down inefficient monopolies -- it can go a long way toward creating a ton of social wealth.

5. Slash it

I agree the defense budget needs trimmed, we have the most powerful military in the world, and it seems that we are spending more that it takes to maintain the upper hand. Second, every law takes money to enforce and the simplification of the legal and penal systems could save billions. Third, a cost-benefit analysis of social programs could help us understand which are worth the money.
