Texas 17th District: Edwards (D) v. Wohlgemuth (R)

Chet Edwards is one of the primary targets of Tom Delay's redistricting campaign. His former district (11th) consisted primarily of Waco and Temple/Killeen/Fort Hood. But with redistricting, his base of support was effectively split in two, with Waco in the new 17th district and Temple/Killeen/Fort Hood in the 11th. Earlier this year, Edwards decided to seek re-election in the new 17th district. The new 17th district keeps McClennan county (Waco) intact, but adds other predominantly rural areas, and College Station, home of Texas A&M.

This makes the new district substantially more Republican than Edwards' old one, but if anyone can pull it out, he can. Chet Edwards is an experienced, moderate Dem with good committees in the house. He is probably the best potential candidate we have for Texas Senate in 2006 (I think Kay-Bailey is retiring). His opponent, State Senator Arlene Wohlgemuth, is positively EVIL. Read her platform if you want to see why. WARNING, may cause you to :puke:

She is not the type of person I want in the United States House of Representatives.

Or read this article:

http://www.texasobserver.org/showArticle.asp?ArticleID=685

"The primary polls had been closed for just an hour on March 12 in Johnson County, and the third floor of the county courthouse in Cleburne already was packed with politicos, lawyers, party regulars, reporters, and political gadflies. It was standing-room-only in the 249th District courtroom, where precinct-by-precinct results were being projected on a large screen. A television nearby blared statewide coverage. Those who couldn’t find a seat pushed up the aisles or, between updates, circulated outside, sharing the latest gossip. Others moved across to the 18th District courtroom, where there was more breathing room."

...

"Bridewell wasn’t alone. County Judge Roger Harmon, a three-term officeholder, and former Burleson Mayor Rick Roper, a candidate for county commissioner, had also been targeted, along with District 22 State Senate candidate Kip Averitt. An official resolution of the Johnson county GOP was printed on the back of a Wohlgemuth flier and sent to every Republican voter in the county. It declared that the "beliefs and background" of all candidates must "mirror the principles" of the party’s state and national platforms. The election of the scorned candidates would be a "detriment to the county, and therefore the Party as well," the resolution said. It was followed a few days later by a flood of ads railing against the four, full of veiled hints, half-truths, and innuendo, and admonishing the faithful that Republican "values" must be upheld."

...

"Yet Wohlgemuth may have burned some bridges in her home base as well. Supporters of Pct. 2 Commissioner Ron Harmon are also angry. Harmon (no relation to the County Judge), a Burleson Republican, resigned from the commissioners court reportedly to run for Wohlgemuth’s House seat, after she announced plans last summer to run for Congress. When U.S. Rep. Joe Barton (R-Ennis) managed to hold onto the county after redistricting, however, Wohlgemuth decided to run for her old seat instead. Harmon was the odd man out, and Arlene apparently didn’t do much to cushion his fall. His supporters want revenge. "She turned her back on Ron," said one, who asked not to be identified for fear of raising Wohlgemuth’s wrath. "She isn’t the good Christian she wants everyone to think she is, she’s a ruthless, ambitious bitch."

This is the face of the enemy:

Study it well, that you may come to know it.

It will be tough for Edwards to pull out a win, but it is possible and he has a fighting chance... So that's the story for TX 17...

3. Arlene Wohlgemuth is a frightening individual.
You can bet that "Hot Tub" Tom will be pulling out the stops. I'm guessing he'll be campaigning for her; maybe she'll get a photo op with Shrubbie.

4. She already has a picture in her brochure
of her with Bushie. I think it was when he was governor though, because he looks younger...

It's in McClennan County.

I think it is so cool that Bush's rep is a dem. I want it to stay that way. Badly.

7. Bleh...that sucks...I didn't think Crawford was in McLennan County.
Oh well...have you seen the list of winners running in district 10? Talk about a freak show...oh, and our illustrious state party is countering with...NOBODY. Not "a nobody". NOBODY!

8. 10th District
Just looked into the 10th distrcit, on the suggestion of GOP is evil... (it is)

Look at that, it stretches all the way from Austin to HOUSTON!!!

:wtf:

Here's Pat Elliot:

http://www.patelliottforcongress.com/

"Hello, I'm PAT ELLIOTT AND I'm running for congress.

If you're like me, you're probably sick and tired of some of the things that are going on in our country. It's the greatest country in the world, but there are some problems that have to be fixed now before it's just too late.

Did you ever think that you would see a time when a prayer before a high school football game would be illegal?

Or that millions of our tax dollars would be going to pay for free medical care, free food and services for illegal immigrants? Do you get free medical care? Free food?

There are millions of illegal immigrants in our country now and more coming every year. And we are doing nothing about it for fear of being called a racist!

Did you ever think that you would hear congress get the permission of the United Nations to defend our way of life?

Does it bother you that our courts are over turning the will of the people in favor of legislating from the bench?

I'm PAT ELLIOTT and I've had it up to here with what is a frightening down hill slide that I believe is making this great country WEAKER NOT STRONGER, FEARFUL NOT CONFIDENT, POLITICALLY CORRECT, NOT MORALLY RIGHT.

I want your vote, your financial help, your time and your labor. I'm PAT ELLIOTT and I'm running for congress."

There's one issue that I sort of agree with him on though!

"FIRE ANT ERADICATION

Fire ants have actually killed people and cost farming & ranching millions on the damage they have done to livestock, buildings and electrical boxes. Wildlife has also suffered much from their deadly stings.

There has been some research with a variety of solutions for the control and eventual elimination of fire ants, but we still have them. A parasite fly is being experimented with in several counties in Texas but no results are in yet. The private sector should be the vehicle to find a solution to fire ants and should be encouraged and helped to find that solution. The only role government should play, other than possible tax incentives, is to organize the application over a widespread area.

Pat Elliott will look into what is being done in this area and will encourage and help private industry to push forward for a solution."

At least this Dave Phillips guy seems to be bordeline-sane. Almost.

9. Yep...my lovely new district...
Thankfully, I rent. When my lease is up, I'm looking at moving to the 25th. I'd rather keep Doggett, but if he loses in the primary, Leticia Hinojosa isn't bad - at least she's a Democrat.

In Austin, you have 3 choices, 2 of them bad.
21st - Lamar Smith :puke:
10th - One of those Houston Suburbanite Tomn DeLay wanna-bes :puke:
25th - Lloyd Doggett or Leticia Hinojosa against a Republican sure to lose.

12. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) unopposed in my new district (30th).
My old congress-critter, Pete Sessions (R-Hell) is running against Martin Frost (D-TX) in the Delay-drawn 24th (?) district. I talked with Johnson's Dallas staff today and was told that the GOP failed to qualify a candidate by the deadline.
