Do you care about Gibson's stupid Jesus movie?
I don't and I am really tired of hearing about it everywhere. Why can't there be some real news anymore? GRRR!

Ya know, I haven't heard one negative report about *bush for days. AWOL has been a dead issue too.

5. You're right
I turn on the news, and all I hear about is the Martha trial and
local car crashes (fatal).
Coverage of real news has disappeared from regular radio and local
TV broadcasts.
Weapons of mass distraction...

The buzz will make it some money no doubt (that and parents forcing their kids to see the "R" rated flick, and church groups buying tickets in mass)

4. it just seems like "The Patriot" only with sandals
all the blood and gore of "the Patriot" was unnecessary and a big turnoff. Same with the Scottish movie--Mel seems to think the shock of on-screen bloodletting can replace a large percentage of the quality in a script.

45. I thought
"Braveheart" was awfully bloody, too. I needed a couple of Advil after seeing it on the big screen.

The tv versions that cut out the blood and gore presented a much better film, IMHO.

10. Haven't seen it. Don't know if I'll go.
I think Mel can make movies -- no problem there -- but I hope Jewish people are not slandered in this one.

I'm not hurling accusations against Gibson, but the controversy over this film is over anti-Semitism.

End of 2-cents' worth.

...I find Mel boring as hell. And I'd rather he not shove his religious issues down everyone's throat. Just out of curiousity, was he abused as an altar boy or something?

Whether they be christian, muslim or jew, a fanatic is a fanatic is a fanatic.

On the other hand, I'm glad to see all the discourse concerning Jesus. Christians as a whole have blindly wallowed in all the crap the various preachers, televangelists etc. have shoved down their throat.

There have been films about the life and death of Jesus since Kalem Studios first made one in 1912, fergawdssake.

19. No, I do not. It's not like we don't know the story line already...
And, like all movies, the intent is to make $$$$$. Mel and all those involved in creating this turgid pseudo-spectacle can give all the lip service they want about a true calling, and piousness, but this flick is being marketed hand over fist.

So get in line for your "Passion" trinkets now -- caps, notepads, books, lapel pins, you name it!

21. Yes, and NO SPOILERS please!
I just hate it when people give away the ending to a movie before everyone gets a chance to see it. Just like those people who told everyone who died in the last Harry Potter book! So don't anyone talk about who dies in this Christ movie before we all get a chance to see it, okay?

25. I'm looking foward to the movie...
This is a newsworthy film because it's semi-maintream (being made by Mel Gibson) but is inciting controversy. Controversial things tend to make news. Hence...

My own personal opinion (which some of you no doubt disagree with) is that Mel Gibson has every right to make a movie about the life of Christ, and he has every right to take it literally from the Bible. Nobody's forcing you to see it, but those of us who would like to see it kindly ask you to ignore it, not push it completely out of society.

If it was all it was cracked up to be, Gibson wouldn't have had to engage in cheap "controversy" to drum up interest. How cliche.

27. Yes
Ours is a society divided. We are in the midst of a culture war and one side has lost its way and the other is rising from a 500 year defeat. The result of their win will not be a good one. The first time their side beat back its opposition it resulted in 1500 years of oppression and stagnation.

Mel Gibbson's interpretation of the Passion is going to fan the flames of this battle. It is going to give their side a sense of outrage against any that do not stand with them. It is going to further divide the camps. And when you wish to declare a war this is the first step. To seperate and dehumanize the opposition.

Consider all the people who are going for the spirituality. These are the same people who think that Joan of Arc was Noah's wife. I'd like to see the looks on their faces when they learn they're still going to have to read.

31. I have no intention of seeing this one
Mel told Diane Sawyer he made the fim as shockingly brutal as he could make it. Shocking brutality is not for me. Shouldn't be for anyone. And I have heard that some churches are advocating taking children to this flick! Shocking stupidity and cruelty. Boo to Mel and his rigid "Christianity". And boo to his senile dad with his warped anti Semitism ( Though Mel can't be held responsible for the ravings of his parent).

33. One reason I "care" about the movie.
It's being pushed as "truthful." It gets me a little that what is essentially a myth is being given the "realism" treatment. To me, this totally missies the point of the myth, yet this is somehow being pushed with great earnestness as being "faithful to history." And the fact that it is on film will only confuse matters more.

Truly amazing that the script is in Aramaic and Latin, when the original language of the earliest Christianity was Greek!

36. I'm pretty sure the standard languages were Aramaic and Latin.
There was a mix of languages spoken in Israel during Christ's lifetime, and Greek may well have been one of them, but I think the primary social languages were Aramaic and Hebrew, while Latin was used for official business (Israel being under Roman control). The epistles were written later, and then Greek would have been the predominant language. But Christ himself would have spoken Aramaic, Hebrew, and or Latin.

41. My point is that the Christ myth was conceived of and written in Greek.
Edited on Sat Feb-21-04 12:47 PM by BurtWorm
It's laughable that anyone would think telling it in Aramaic and Latin would make it more "realistic."

PS: "Realism" is not the point of the myth!

PPS: It's infuriating that "realism" is being pushed as piety, when in fact it should be considered outrageous blasphemy.

And now CNN is going to be showing a program called, "The Mystery of Jesus." :puke:

This PANDERING is making me puke. I'm tired of having what I believe to be the MYTHOLOGICAL JESUS stuffed down my throat (doesn't mean there wasn't a real Jesus who was a great philosopher and teacher).

When does the backlash against these right-wing evangelical mythological Jesus freaks begin? :grr:
