Need some help, A wingnut friend on verge of conversion
Ok, here's the deal. My best friend has been a BIG bush supporter. She really is a very nice lady and quite intelligent but lives in a rural area and gets her news mainstream. She also has two daughters aged 18 and 22 who are her life.

I sent her info on the Pending legislation in the House and Senate (twin bills S 89 and HR 163) would time the program so the draft could begin at early as Spring 2005 and pointed out that they include women as well as men. Her response was:

"hey, and thnx for ruining my day with the draft stuff....that sucks. I am gonna vote for anyone for pres who does NOT support.
"

So, what I need is ammo to push her over the edge and convince her that the current admin. is not likely to let up their warring ways any time soon, such as the perle "total war" quote and PNAC info.

Also, if any of you know if any of the candidates have taken a position on the possible draft or if anyone in the admin has commented on it I'd be very grateful.

As always, with wingnuts, mainstream is easier for them to swallow!

I have to run an errand for work but I'll be right back. Thanks in advance!!

1. Pat Buchanan skewers neocon Richard Perle
An effective strategy in trying to persuade a conservative is to use another conservative's arguments. Pat Buchanan is definitely a far-right conservative, and in this article in The American Conservative magazine he takes apart NEO-conservative Richard Perle and his new book An End to Evil.

Perle is a leader among the neoconservatives who have essentially written the Bush foreign policy, and Perle is advocating wars against Syria, Iran, and just about any other country that stands in our way or threatens Israel.

Buchanan takes apart Perle and his book:

Here are a couple of conservative web sites that oppose Bush:

Conservatives Against Bush

Americans Against Bombing (Conservative/Libertarian coalition)
http://www.againstbombing.org/

And here's one of my favorite commentaries that makes a very strong case that Bush lied us into war, written by someone who voted for Bush:

3. DU's PNAC Links Archive is located in the Bush/Conservatives folder
You'll find plenty of ammo there. And in particular I think this M. Meacher article is a good, scary intro to PNAC.

This war on terrorism is bogus
The 9/11 attacks gave the US an ideal pretext to use force to secure its global domination
Michael Meacher
Saturday September 6, 2003
The Guardian

Massive attention has now been given - and rightly so - to the reasons why Britain went to war against Iraq. But far too little attention has focused on why the US went to war, and that throws light on British motives too. The conventional explanation is that after the Twin Towers were hit, retaliation against al-Qaida bases in Afghanistan was a natural first step in launching a global war against terrorism. Then, because Saddam Hussein was alleged by the US and UK governments to retain weapons of mass destruction, the war could be extended to Iraq as well. However this theory does not fit all the facts. The truth may be a great deal murkier.

We now know that a blueprint for the creation of a global Pax Americana was drawn up for Dick Cheney (now vice-president), Donald Rumsfeld (defence secretary), Paul Wolfowitz (Rumsfeld's deputy), Jeb Bush (George Bush's younger brother) and Lewis Libby (Cheney's chief of staff). The document, entitled Rebuilding America's Defences, was written in September 2000 by the neoconservative think tank, Project for the New American Century (PNAC).

The plan shows Bush's cabinet intended to take military control of the Gulf region whether or not Saddam Hussein was in power. It says "while the unresolved conflict with Iraq provides the immediate justification, the need for a substantial American force presence in the Gulf transcends the issue of the regime of Saddam Hussein."

The PNAC blueprint supports an earlier document attributed to Wolfowitz and Libby which said the US must "discourage advanced industrial nations from challenging our leadership or even aspiring to a larger regional or global role". It refers to key allies such as the UK as "the most effective and efficient means of exercising American global leadership". It describes peacekeeping missions as "demanding American political leadership rather than that of the UN". It says "even should Saddam pass from the scene", US bases in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait will remain permanently... as "Iran may well prove as large a threat to US interests as Iraq has". It spotlights China for "regime change", saying "it is time to increase the presence of American forces in SE Asia".

4. If your friend is Christian, but not Fundie
and has a decent intellect I would suggest you print this out and give it to her.

http://www.axisoflogic.com/artman/publish/article_5160.shtml

It will scare any Christian who has not converted to Fundie-wacko. It is very well researched and quite scary.

I've printed out some copies and am handing them out at our local churches.

GOOD LUCK

8. Looks quite juicy
Yes, she considers herseld Christian, raised catholic but hates fundys. She reads about 10 books a month, alas, fiction for the most part. Thanks for the info, wading thru all the wonderful help I knew my fellow DUers would come up with.

This really could mean more than one vote, her daughters pretty much fall in lockstep behind her and she is quite the persuasive speaker. If I could get her to turn it could affect dozens!

7. Not there yet
This is the first carck in the armor. NOTHING I have sent previously has made a dent but I was reading a DU thread on the draft, knew how dearly she cares for her draft age daughters and put 2 and 2 together and sent her the info on the draft.

Just a week ago or so we had a spat on IM when I mentioned I had heard the 9-11 widows on NPR and that they made me cry with their desperate story about trying to get info out of the admin and all the roadblocks. She mentioned that it would have happened under any admin and how shrubbie was tougher on terra compared to Clinton. When I said this was not true and I could back it up she accuse ME of being close minded and having already made up my mind.

I sent her one of Will's great truthout articles along with other info and she didn't even read it, just deleted. Now that is may be personal (and I have NEVER met anyone with fiercer mothering instincts) I may have her attention, however slight. I need to proceed gently as her whole world may be turning on her but when "Clarence" gets her wings and the bell rings, I'll let y'all know.
