Newsweek article on offshoring...
This puts the lie to the idea that we should just "retool" as the Republicans suggest.

For now, worker anxiety seems destined to remain high—and the demographic that Wired magazine has dubbed "pissed-off tech workers" seems likely to grow more vocal. "You have people who did exactly what these economists said to do—their parents saved and sent them to school ... and now their high-tech jobs are moving offshore," says Marcus Courtney, president of WashTech, a Seattle-based worker-advocacy group. It's a disorienting reversal, the kind that's punishing people who "played by the rules," as John Edwards says in his stump speech. Standing in a crowd at an Edwards rally in New York last week, Linda Muller recognized the conundrum. Muller, 60, a retired textile worker, recalls how everyone flocked to high-tech when textile factories closed. Now those jobs are threatened, too? "It sure makes you scratch your head," she says. Or raise a fist. Or pull a voting lever.

2. and now
we are flocking into health care and service type jobs.

Myself, I am getting lay-ed off in June. I plan to attend an 8 month massage therapy course and open up my own business. My severance pay will allow for this

I am doing this for two reasons, 1. as stated above I am losing my 85k 4 weeks vacation pay as a techy

2. I am sick of being a techy

However, my is son graduating in July and I feel for him and me, as I will never get him out of my house now
:-(

3. Some states already mandate pricey malpractice insurance ...
not to mention, state boards and "certification." Do you just plan to irritate the nerve endings of your "regular" repugs?

I think it's odd that the airwaves are filled w/ads for these quickie courses - I suspect it's all those "previous" students that can't build a client base (it's the economy)and found some loophole to start a school. Be careful! Many of the "computer" quickie schools filed for backruptcy and left students in the lurch with large federal loans to repay (this I think has been rectified, but not in time for many).

5. I wish someone would tell me exactly what these
new and modern high tech jobs are that the free traders keep trying convince us will suddenly be created. Most of the high tech jobs in left in this country require you to have a graduate degree in engineering or chemistry or law or all of the above. Where the hell do you start again in your fifties? You can't retire now because they robbed you of your retirement fund. You can't rely on social security in a few years. Do you need more student loans at this time of life? What are these people thinking?
