I've looked around and haven't seen the O'Reilly connection here. If you can put the link, that would greatly enhance the discussion.
As a Jew, I have no interest in anything New Testament (nothing but a best seller IMHO) or the ramblings about the content. I know from the stories my grandmother told me of younger years in the Stetl in Poland (the Jewish segregated area) where her village was regularly ransacked by Russian Cossacks...and their reason? The Jews killed Jesus.
Over the years I've had some very spirited discussions with Christian acquaintances over this issue and each faith has some version that equates Jews with the death of Jesus. Most will then quickly denounce it or downplay it, that has been a mantra in Christianity that extremely prevelent in fundie areas and, even worse, around the world...especially in Europe where Anti-Semetism is on the rise.
I've sensed that the hype on this flick has been orchestrated to the Right Wing/Fundie crowd...see if they can make box office money off this group like they have with books and broadcasting. It dovetails into the political as the Repugnicans claim they are the party of Christians and any backlash against the movie is obviously "libbies, commies and athiest"...yes, us immoral people.
Betcha Mr. O. will never come clean with his interest. What's even goofier is his fascination with Hollywood. He claims how he hates it, how evil the movies are and so on...yet will swoon at any celeb that dares to venture on the set...look how he toned things down on Rosie after she came on.
This guy's ego is so over the top it's laughable. I will throw on his garbage...always in reruns...and laugh at how blatant his hypocrisies are and how thin that ego is. He's let his fame get to his head...hard to make one even bigger...and just twitches into near spasms when he's called on his overt partisanship and bias.
Come to think of it, does Mr. O. have a shell corporation? A production company? One that he can funnel money into ventures like Gibsons (which he says is self-financed) and others.
As one for free speech and expression, Gibson's movie shouldn't be censored or banned...I expect this to blow over shortly as the first big box office weekend will come and go (that's the real game here) and soon it'll pass into the syndication/distribution money cycle...(PPV, Cable, International distribution, DVD, rentals...so on). No doubt, the producers must be very happy...the got millions in free publicity...every local news crew is camped out at the local theater to get reaction...and people, even if they're not interested in the story (or message) will go to see it, just to see what all the noise is about.
