Why is Aristide being allowed to call the media?
I've just been reading about his interview on CNN (& AP interview), plus his calls this morning to Maxine Walters (sp?) & others -- & it kinda beggers the above question.

Surely this would be the last thing Bush Inc would want, so why are the troops guarding him allowing it?

Any ideas on this?

2. Maybe the troops are standing behind him while he makes the calls
With full clips. Bush will NOT want this getting out.

6. He was on the Lou Dobbs show and then talked to Anderson Cooper
when his show came on. He was very hard to understand. A deep accent and a cell phone connection.

8. So they're smearing him as 'mentally unstable' over there
OK, I can dig that. We're not getting that spin over here.

The whole thing is just so odd.

The Beeb just did an interview with a Jamaican Ambassador who seemed equally puzzled over whether the US was involved. Also seemed perplexed that he's in Central African Republic & not in the Caribbean.

10. "Once he got word out, their only choice was to paint him as a nut.."
by letting him talk away and be contradicted.

Getting the word out through Maxine Waters & Randall Robinson put the BFEE in an awkward position. They couldn't just kill him or keep him incommunicado without increasing suspicion. So..let him start talking..maybe with threats if he said too much..enough to let some air out of the balloon.

Then, they can count on the talking heads to spin it as the crazy ravings of a desparate deposed tyrant.

Lost--I totally agree
I was watching Blitzer when Rangle was arguing with some repuke nut and offered Blitzer the telephone number that he had had traced. The reactions of the next few hours on all cable news was the "if he was kidnapped, why would they let him call anyone". I think the guy may have been able to get off some calls. When this started to hit the media mid day, the media used the "phone" excuse to paint him as a nut. Thus, it is in the Bush interest to have him keep making calls so they can say "wouldn't we have kept him from phones if we really kidnapped him??". I think we have been stinking in this situation from the get go. Why did we side with rebels against an elected president?? And what is the story of the guy within the administration who hates the Hatians and is the big advisor on all this?? I think our armpits need a little cleaning...again.

12. Yeah, I can see that
like I said above, we're not getting that 'he's nuts' spin - just lots of confused commentators occassionally hinting at other signs of US involvement (such as state of rebels weapons), but not really knowing what to believe.

Strange days.

16. I think BushCo is too stupid to know that Aristide lived in DC for years
and has lots of friends.

Chances are he remembered Robinson's phone #.

14. Waters reported this morning...
on Democracy Now that a cell phone was smuggled to Aristide. Once he made his calls, the cat was out of the bag so what could the Bush crime family do at that point?

17. Thanks. Hadn't heard the phone bit.
The narrative - from kidnap to CNN - makes a lot more sense now. An American journalist speaking to the Beeb just said that "the Black Caucus are distancing themselves from Waters" (& I'm sure he said 'conspiracy theories') so I guess it's time for the "Waters is a Castro sympathizer" stuff to hit the media your end.

19. I don't know about that...
There are times when that kind of statement is put out there to cause a rift... kick up suspicion ...fracture a united front, create a negative image of one person in hopes that the other will in fact "distance" themselves.

15. Since when has the Bush administration been competent?
Do I really need to provide examples?

One tidbit: When Aristide was on the phone, he said that he was given a warm welcome by C.A.R. officials after he finally arrived (after 20 hours in the plane). Perhaps they were supposed to keep him quiet, but didn't.
