3. Does anyone know...
...what the half-life of depleted uranium is by any chance? Can it be cleaned up by sandblasting the desert in Iraq? As our troops return, how much of this stuff can be safely brought back into the United States on each soldier's person? The word depleted does mean totally used up, correct? Or did it actually mean only decreased of it's usefulness as a fuel for our nuclear reactors? Maybe Canada could be the first port of entry for our returning troops where they can empty the sand out of their belongings, say it the tundra regions of Baffin Island, and exchange their blood and other body fluids with non-contaminated Canadians. NAFTA in action! Run this by Rumsfelt would ya please.:dunce:

5. I think sandblasting is a terrible idea
The half life is long - it's not very radioactive. "Depleted" does mean it is less useful for nuclear reactors - it has less of the isotope that is the basis of the fission (I think you could mix weapons-grade uranium and depleted uranium to get a viable reactor fuel).
In good solid form, it's not dangerous - it's used as a heavy weight in things like yacht keels and aeroplane tails. It's when it's a dust that can be inhaled (or maybe ingested) that the problem comes; it emits alpha radiation - which can be stopped by your skin, but not the soft tissue inside you (in fact the CDC says the chemical properties may be worse than the radioactivity). This is why sandblasting might be the worst thing possible. When used in weapons, you end up with some dust after the explosion. I doubt much gets transferred onto people's clothing (and wash them once and you'll dilute the concentration enormously); the people are at risk when in the area the weapons exploded.
