Jimmy Carter and Religious Right Hypocrisy
Edited on Sat Mar-06-04 10:49 PM by Dob Bole
I read this article and decided to post it- Jimmy Carter is entirely the reason that I am a Democrat.

THE REAGAN - CARTER IRONY

One of the baffling things to me and several Religious Right observers is the seemingly contradictory way in which Ronald Reagan is held in such high esteem and men like Jimmy Carter are scorned. The obvious Republican bias is one answer but still does not fulfill the explanation. Arguably, Dukakis and Clinton have received more than their fair share of assaults by the group. This still leaves the Carter issue unsettled.

At the three national Coalition rallies I attended, the anti-Clinton rhetoric was extreme. Clinton bashing or promises to unseat the administration drew jubilant exclamations of religious fervor from the crowd. Some of the booths sold demeaning buttons and posters of the President. One booth peddled a book by Jennifer Flowers which was supposed to contain, "Bill's candid comments about Hillary's sexual preferences;".

2. Jimmy is the reason I'm a liberal....
I was 7 years old and wrote him a letter in my big old 7 year old handwriting. He wrote back (yes, I know it was a form letter).

I still have the letter and I still carry his ideals with me to this day.

5. Cool
I actually live near Plains and have gotten to meet the President. Wasn't there the Sunday that Howard Dean came, though.

3. Holy folk, lapping up the gory details of Hillary's sexual preferences
I can't even imagine one progressive who would care.

4. I love Jimmy
He was the first prez I was ever aware of as a kid. I loved his wife because she looked and sounded like my best friend's mom. And of course now I love him because I can see for myself what an extraordinary man he is.

6. As a libertarian, a cop and a student of Zen: god bless you, Jimmy Carter
Keep walking it like you talk it, and never let the bastards see you sweat.

Not one, single drop.

You inspire me.

7. Jimmy Carter was mocked
for his religious beliefs by the same fundies that embrace *'s phony righteousness.

Seems to me that Falwell et. al. and their congregations are beholden to the antiChrist.

and it pains me to write this but it is all about racism. And don't let the spinmeisters fool you. As a Georgia governor Carter allowed a portrait of Martin Luther KIng, Jr. to hang in the Capitol Building! Some people here still don't forgive him for that.

I cannot express the utter sadness I feel when I meet people of this conviction-even in my own family. I tend to lose hope for mankind.
