...with weapons flying into the airport in an American-owned 727-100 cargo plane in Harare, Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe seizes US plane
08/03/2004

Harare - Zimbabwean security authorities have impounded a US-registered aircraft that landed at the country's main international airport carrying military equipment and 64 men aboard suspected to be mercenaries, Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi announced on Monday.

"A United States of America-registered Boeing 727-100 cargo plane was detained last night (Sunday) at 19:30 at Harare International Airport after its owners had made a false declaration of its cargo and crew," the minister told a news conference.

"The plane was actually carrying 64 suspected mercenaries of various nationalities," he said.

1. If You're Talking Barking Bob's Land Reform...
If you're talking about Barking Bob's land reform policies, also known as state-sponsored intimidation, violence, and murder, then I'll take U.S. covert ops any day over Randy Rob's "land reform."

2. I think the mercenaries are there because land reform is probably going
to work.

3. That's My Read As Well
Yep, that's my read as well.

There's enough former Selous Scouts, Grey's Scouts, and Rhodesian SAS guys cooling their heels in South Africa since Rhodesia became Zimbabwe that come from that same white large hold farmer community that there would be no shortage of links to mercs and private military corporations (both current and former, i.e. former Executive Outcomes people out of South Africa).

Although many of the former Selous Scouts, Grey's Scouts, and Rhodesian SAS are going to be pushing it age-wise to kick off a firefight in Zimbabwe, if this news story is true (reminding ourselves that Zimbabwe's state news ranks only slightly lower than North Korea's when it comes to lack of content and laughs) it smacks of amateurish attempts to stir up trouble.

I mean this isn't the Comoros, after all!

6. It's a relative question, and it seems to be the choice Zimbabweans
are being forced into.

If it weren't for land reform, there'd be no mercenaries.
