Texas mosque attacked
http://www.mywesttexas.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=11088539&BRD=2288&PAG=461&dept_id=475621&rfi=6

<The spiritual leader of a Lubbock mosque discovered anti-Muslim graffiti, broken computers and broken windows when he arrived at the mosque for morning prayers on Sunday.>

<Police said the graffiti and vandalism of the Islamic Center of the South Plains took place sometime between 10 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday. Police would not elaborate on what the graffiti said, but mosque officials said they were racial and anti-Muslim in nature.>

<Lubbock police Lt. Jerry Brewer said there was significant property damage. In addition to the broken equipment and windows, a sound system and a VCR were stolen and a donation box was torn open, and the funds inside stolen, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported in its Monday editions.>

<Imam Mohamed El-Moctar said he discovered the vandalism when he arrived at 6:20 a.m.>

Anti-Muslim sentiment in America is rising rapidly yet the American media, which has given a substantial amount of coverage to rising anti-Semitism in Europe, ignores this completely. This silence speaks volumes about what mainstream America thinks of American Muslims.

1. Clearly the media doesn't ignore these hate crimes completely --
we have this report to show that.

I'm part of mainstream America and I think the same thing of American Muslims as I do of American atheists, Jews, Christians, Buddhists, etc., etc., etc.

2. That is a report in a local newspaper
Of course it is going to cover it. Some isolated incidents get coverage but there are never any stories about the overall increase in anti-Muslim sentiment in America like there are about anti-Semitism in Europe.

DU'ers are not mainstream.:(

media"

And you're right. Anti-Muslim sentiment won't get as much attention here as anti-Semitism in Europe, or even as much as anti-Palestine sentiment in Israel. But then, here in America, no one has committed mass murder against Muslims, and no one has waged war against Muslims demanding their own homeland.

I liken hate crimes against Muslims here to hate crimes against Jews or blacks or gays. As such, they get as much attention as any other hate crimes.

Edit: I'm ignorant, though, of the European media coverage of anti-Semite activities. How widespread is the problem? Is it covered daily? Are there riots? Bombings? Murder? Are various countries trying to fight it with legislation? Do the police do anything?

Good point. Only the most egregious ones get some coverage. 99% of them are ignored.

The American media often covers rising anti-Semitism in Europe, especially in France. How widespread is the problem? There has been an increase in hate crimes against Jews recently and that is used, mostly by right-wing outlets, to browbeat Europe as anti-Semitic. Hate crimes there are about as rare as they are in America.

I don't know how much coverage the European media has given to the problem.

6. It is wrong for any one
to vandalize, de-mark or steal from any religious group(or any one). Period.

That said friend, I did hear about this incident on the news last night. (OK Midland, were your link is from) Also, now hold your breath, last night my husband was watching Fox, it had this story on it. I do not know if they ran it because a guest brought it up on one of it's panel shows,(I don't watch Fox enough to know the show's or host's name.) or if they were going to anyway?

They are one of the major promoters of anti-Muslim, and anti-non-white straight Christian sentiment in general.

8. They had
a Senator, the host and a young (OK young compared to me) man who was a Muslim. Did any one else see the show? I was in and out of the room while it was on.
