I Shook Dennis Kucinich's Hand this Weekend
Congressman Kucinich spoke at the CDC (California Democratic Council) Convention this weekend. We had set up a Howard Dean table right next to the entrance of the conference room and, on the way into his speech he walked by our table, stopped, shook my hand and said, "Good luck." In turn, I said, "Thank you, Congressman, good luck to you as well." Nice man and a classy thing to do. I thought our DU Kucinich supporters would be interested. :hi:

1. Very interesting...
Dean and Kucinich are close matches on the war in Iraq.

2. However, I'm worried
some of his, er, more vocal supporters at the convention seem to be insinuating that they would not vote for Dean if he gets the nomination. No one actually out-and-out said that but some of the vitriol coming from them against Dean has me worried. A lot of our local Kucinich supporters are very liberal and a lot of Greens have joined them. I certainly don't have a problem with that but I'm hoping that they will support whoever wins the nomination (with one exception).

As a Kucinich supporter, what is your take on that? And just in case you're wondering, yes, I will support Kucinich if he gets the nomination.

6. I think a lot of that has to do with...
Dean and Dennis both courting anti-war voters and I think it is frustrating for Dean to be getting all the attention while DK who voted against the resolution in congress is just as vocal. I think that if Dean is nominated that many DK voters will vote for him to stop Bush. I know that Dean is getting his share of ex-Green/Nader voters who show up at our meetups and yesterday a couple of ex-Nader supporters stopped by the Dean table at Farmers Market in Madison, Wi saying that they totally support Dean (with DK as their second choice).

3. I shook his hand...
...way before you did. Way back in May. My son 16 year old son, too! I thanked him for his service to the City of Cleveland and by extension to the citizens of the US.
He's a man of conviction, beholden to.........the idea that this land is your land as well as my land, to cop a conceptual idea from the late, great American songwriter Woody Guthrie.
Anybody else notice similarities/differences between The philosophy of these two?

4. I really like DK
He has moved up in my estimation in this campaign. Infact my top three candidates for the nomination are: Howard Dean, Bob Graham, and Dennis Kucinich--incidentally all three were against the war--a major point for me. He is a classy guy and I think he has a big future.

7. A classy candidate and SO PRESIDENTIAL.
In Santa Fe, some were disappointed when he said he wouldn't personally attack Bush.(He wouldn't approve of our calling him a chimp.)He's not attacking other candidates, either. He is so POSITIVE, calling out the best in the nation without resorting to name-calling.

It doesn't surprise me that he shook your hand. A class act.

8. As a
and Nadar voter last time, I am willing to vote Democratic IF there is a choice this time. DK and HD are definately great choices-in fact, my husband voted for DK and I voted for HD in the MoveOn primary (we both voted Nadar last time).

9. uplifting report
At a recent event here in Traverse City MI (Governor's Breakfast) some Kucinich supporters had a table of campaign stuff. One saw my Dean button on my purse and asked me if I'd like a Kucinich button to go with. :-) She was really nice and I had a great conversation with her and a couple more Kucinich supporters. It may have helped that I made it known I thought highly of him right when we started chatting. I also cited my concerns that the country is so far right at this time I didn't think he was electable becasue of that. They willingly conceded the point (the country's gone to the right) and quickly told me they'd be backing whatever Dem got the nom. We both wished each other luck an said we looked forward to working together in the GE regardless of candidate.

It was a very uplifting experience. Funny how sometimes the supporters of "peaceniks" (haha) can get along so well in spite of supporting different candidates.

Great report LTH. :hi:

Julie

12. Amazing how that works, isn't it?
A good friend of mine who is a local political activist is the organizer of the local Kucinich campaign (he was also instrumental in getting the Congresman here). Anyway, we have this friendly "rivalry" going on between us but there is an understanding that we will vote for each others' candidates should they get the nomination.

It really isn't that difficult and I wish some on this board would get that. It's been such a pit lately. We need to remember that we're ALL fighting for the same thing -- to get Bushco* OUT OF OFFICE!

13. "We need to remember that we're ALL fighting...to get Bushco* OUT"
But we're not. My goal is to turn the country around. That will have as a side effect getting Bushco out, but it's not my goal. So I won't just vote for ABB. As things stand now, Dennis Kucinich is the only candidate who can get my vote, whether check-off or write-in.

Dennis is the only candidate any Democrat, Green, or Socialist should be voting for, in my opinion.

11. I shook Jimmy Carter's hand twice!!
In 1979 I was 15 and JC was promoting Energy Independence and arrived in Wabasha, Minnesota (along the Mississippi River) on the Delta Queen. A huge crowd came out to hear the president. Then he starting working the crowd--I put my hand out at the beginning and he took it (I can't say he shook it rather he pumped it) and then after he finished pumping my hand I moved down towards the end of the line and he pumped it again. A Great man then and a Great man now.

14. OK, TOTALLY unrelated but . . .
did you know the Delta Queen was made in Stockton, CA and the "Delta" part refers to the Sacramento Delta? Just a small sample of the tons of completely useless information I have swarming in my head. ;-)

15. Anyone but Bush in 2004
I'm a DK supporter - he is where my heart is in the primary, but I will support anybody but Bush is 2004...and the only president's hand I have ever shook, unfortunately, was our current pResidents, while he was governor and visited the State agency where I worked.

16. It's great when you have the opportunity
to actually meet the candidates. I got to meet Lieberman (not that he is my candidate). I hope I get to meet Dean. Congrats.
