Anyone ever heard of Koch (pronounced Coke) Industries?....
I'm reading Greg Palast's book Best Democracy Money Can Buy and he mentions this super-rich corporation who likes to move quietly behind the scenes funding various right-wing "coalitions"

It's corporate ideology is based in the John Birch Society. In fact the founder of Koch Industries helped create the John Birch Society and other fanatical right-wing think tanks.

1. Yes
David H. Koch is a trustee of the organization I'm a fundraiser for, so I have quite a bit of information what Koch Industries funds.

The Koch family is extremely right-wing and also beset by constant infighting over the distribution of the company, which was founded by the Koch brother's father.

5. Don't they have an Iraq contract?
I seem to remember they were on the short list with Bechtel and Halliburton, et al.

Anyway, another rightwing family business. So what else is new? We got Ben&Jerry's, they got Coors and Koch.

6. One of their big stock holders died in the last 3 years or so
He was in his nineties, from Houston and had a well publicized "romance" with a titty dancer.

I believe she is that overweight drugged out blonde bimbo who had a short lived TV thingy going on. Having trouble remembering her name.

Koch is either the largest or second largest non-pubicly traded company in the country.

Most of the $475 million she'll get is in Koch Industries stock.

7. Their corporate ideology...
... is unmitigated greed--if they can't get the government to give it to them, they'll steal it. Do a Google for them and Indian and oil royalties and you'll get stuff like this:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2000/11/27/60II/main252545.shtml

The Kochs are proof that ill-gotten money is always ill-spent.

Cheers.

9. Isn't there a Koch Oil in Oklahoma ? Koch Brothers ? Is that part of this?
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 10:20 AM by sinookas
There is a Koch Oil in Oklahoma I am pretty sure.
I think I have seen that they give a lot of campaign money to Evan Bayh, (D-Martinsville) among many others.

Also I was snooping around the net at one time and I thought I saw Bush in-laws named Koch ? A Dorothy Koch Bush or a Dorothy Bush Koch?

Wouldn't surprise me none.

14. Yes on both counts -- Koch brothers and a Koch in the Bush family
But I never was able to trace the Koch in the Bush family, no idea if its a relative of the infamous Koch brothers.

btw, I heard former congressman Andy Jacobs speak last night. Made me lament his age, and that it is Evan, not Jacobs who is our senator.

22. I knew you'd catch that one -- and an Andy Jacobs quote in Nuvo
I won't vote against Evan, but I won't knock myself out working for him neither.

Julia Carson, what do you need me to do in your campaign ?

The Latest Nuvo Weekly Newspaper has a quote from Andy Jacobs, they run one every week in a little box called 'thoughtbite', and it is always an Andy Jacobs thought. This weeks is:

"Odai Hussein got what he deserved, but at the price of a lot of young Americans getting what they did not deserve."

Nuvo is online at www.nuvo.net

13. In addition to funding the usual right wing suspects, they give $$$ to DLC
http://lists.democracygroups.org/pipermail/rightwatch/2001q2/000103.html
RWWATCH - June 11, 2001 (please forward)

Leadership Council email list earlier today. FYI the DLC is not
the Democratic National Committee, but a splinter group of "centrist"
Democrats whose membership has included Joe Lieberman, Al Gore, John
Kerry, John Edwards, and now Hilary Clinton.

The news is that the DLC is holding their annual "Strategy Session"
in a few weeks:

Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 14:29:03 -0500
From: ndol_admin@dlcppi.org (New Democrats Online)
Subject: Important DLC Strategy Session
<
http://www.ndol.org & http://www.ppionline.org >

Special Event Invitation:
Please join DLC Chairman Evan Bayh in Indianapolis next month
for an important gathering of New Democrat elected officials and
community leaders:
The DLC's 5th Annual National Conversation
July 15-17, 2001
Westin Indianapolis Hotel
Indianapolis, Indiana

The interesting thing about this event is that it is actually
touting the fact that it is funded by Koch Industries of Kansas.
This company is one of the anchors of the CONSERVATIVE movement,
and is a major contributor to the Bush campaign. To be fair, Koch
is only one of more than a dozen sponsors. Here is the list
of event sponsors, straight from the DLC web site at
http://www.ndol.org/ndol_ci.cfm?contentid=3397&subid=166&kaid=126 :

---------

TAP: Vol 12, Iss. 7. How the DLC Does It. Robert Dreyfuss.
... One member of the DLC's executive council is none other than Koch Industries, the
privately held, Kansas-based oil company whose namesake family members are

16. Ohhh, yes indeedy. VERY familiar with that gang of thieves. There is
even a term "koch barrels" which describes how they empty out a tank of crude oil and report to the royalty owners anywhere from 5 to 15 percent lower numbers of barrels than they actually picked up. I have been on the receiving end of that little scam.

18. Koch Industries...
The second largest privately held company in America. Primarily oil and gas refining, distribution, pipeline services. Run by three brothers, Frederick, Charles, and David. Big inheritance feud a couple of years ago, settled now.

Founded by their father, he developed and patented the process for cold cracking petroleum into gasoline.

Very private, very conservative family.

Like most major corporations, donate heavily to rethug national committee, and rethug candidates, although they do give to the DNC, too.

All three brothers listed in the Forbes 400 wealthiest Americans.

25. three brothers, Frederick, Charles, and David Koch
Plus the "disgruntled" brother Bill who sued.....

Anybody have any pieces of a family tree on the Koch family? Their father and founder of the company is Fred Koch.

It's a far-flung bunch of companies, apparently. Just their entrepreneurial wing covers quite a few companies. (See Portfolio) http://www.kochventures.com/

Privately-owned companies tend to fly under the radar much more than publically-owned, even really big ones.

I would not say that Koch is just like Enron, as was alleged above. Part of the way Enron cheated millions was by pumping up its stock price with accounting fakery. Koch is not a publically traded company, so that line of fakery is not open to it.
