I'm not proud of this but,
screw it...on second thought, I'm glad I did it.

I'm surfing on the web and the phone rings. My wife in the other room looks at the caller ID and yells out..."it's the Marines calling!"....I tell her I'll get it....I answer the phone-

Me: Hello
Marines: Yes, this is Sgt. So and so is Mark ------ home? (my son)
Me: Yes, speaking.
Marines: Yeah, Mark how you doin'?
Me: Fine
Marines: Good. Say Mark what do you plan on doin' after high school?
Me: Going to college.
Marines: Well what do you think about joining the Marine Corps?
Me: I don't want to do that.
Marines: Why not?
Me: Because I don't want to die in Iraq.
Marines: click. dial tone.
Me: hello?, Hello?

P.S. My son knows and approved of my action. Also, I'm a vet- screw Bush and his phony-ass war in Iraq.

2. Wow!
I guess the recruitment office gets lonely. They are taking up calling teenagers now. I don't have any kids but plenty of nephews and I am glad none of them are of recruiting age.

Not fun either, I'm sure.

7. Great Photo Signature
I got a lump in my throat upon seeing it. It's surreal that the photo looks like a painting of a real President and Bush is a fake they want us to believe is real.

9. They get the kid's names and numbers from the high school.
Standard practice. You have to request the school not release the information, if you don't want them to call. In fact, I think there is a form to fill out. (You know, I don't think the Boy Scouts can get kid's names and numbers from schools, but the Armed Forces sure can.)

I'm surprised he hung up, though. Doesn't sound like a Marine to give up that easily. Must have been hearing it all day.

3. Does your phone actually do that?
I mean go straight to dial tone after the other party hangs up. It's always in the movies, but my phone never does that...

5. Good for you!
I had those assholes calling my sons from morning til night.
Unfortunately, they snagged one of them and he is in Iraq.
Everytime they called I screamed at them I would sue them..I have an unlisted number for petes sake!
Good for you.

11. They still call my house
even though I graduated last year. They didn't seem to care that I was 16 when they started calling me. I answered one day...

Recruiter: "What are your plans after high school?"
Me:"I'm going to college."
R:"Where"
M:"Well, either U. of Penn, UCLA or University of Toronto."
R:"Who's going to pay for that?"
M:"My parents."
R:"Oh, OK, well, let me know if you're interested in the reserves anytime."
M:"OK, bye"

I don't know what my mom says to them now, but I think they call a couple of times a month. I'll enlist when I'm damn good and ready, like after I get my Ph.D

Then they can call me "Dr. Ensign Rocky"!

What they're doing somehow seems just incredibly wrong to me. I only hope my friends have the courage to do what you did when the call comes.

14. I still remember how I go the Marine recruiter to stop calling me.
It went like this:

Me: Hello?
Marines: This is Sgt. ____. Is this Dan?
Me: Yep.
Marines: So what are your plans after high school?
Me: I'm going to college.
Marines: Ever think of joining the Marines?
Me: Nope, not really.
Marines: Well, what are you going to school for? The Marines can train you to do just about anything, and you'll be making money at the same time.
Me: Really?
Marines: Yes!
Me: How about interior design?
Marines: What?
Me: Y'know. Interior design. I want to make places pretty. Or art would be good. Got any art programs in the Marines?
Marines: No.
Me: Say, what are you wearing?
Marines: What?
Me: What are you wearing? Are you wearing those butch shoes? I love that look.
Marines: Well, it's been nice talking to you, Dan.

They never called again.

18. heh, nice
Back when I was in high school, I don't remember them calling but they did come visit my high school. No one went to talk to the recruiter, so my friend and I decided to get out of class to talk to him. He said that the Marines could offer me many great careers. I told him that I wanted to be a computer scientist or a physicist, but I was morally (not religiously as I'm an atheist) opposed to killing--even in war. He said that was no problem, and offered me the position of Chaplain's Assistant. For some reason he had trouble convincing me why an atheist, pacifist kid who dreams of being a scientist would want to be a Chaplain's Assistant.

19. It works on religious people too...
Not that im against ALL religion, just the ones that recruit. Whenever a Mormon(for example) walks up to me on campus to ask me if I would be interested in finding Jesus, I just tell them, "Yeah my boyfriend and I are actually looking for a church to marry us, will you do it?" They always just back away slowly.

23. I used to love it when the Mormon "Elders" (18 year old kids) would ask
"Have you ever read the Book of Mormon?"

My straight answer is, "Yes, it reads like a third grader wrote the thing."

25. LMAO!!
I can't believe some of these responses! You guys are great! I can't imagine what I would do if they ever called my son. Fortunately, he's only 8, but I live in fear that we'll have a president similar to * when he comes of age and I'll have to start screening some of the calls.

27. My son hasn't been getting any calls but tons of mail
I signed the form last year preventing the school from giving out his information. Perhaps that is why no phone calls. They got his name and address from the state when he got his driver's license. The mail started arriving within a month of him getting his regular license.

Thanks to you all, I can give him some ideas about how to handle the calls when they start - and I'm sure they will sooner or later.

28. All of these responses are classic
I signed a form so that my daughter doesn't get called. But they came to the school and pass out lots of freebies. Pens, lightup bouncing ball, and try to sell the kids on the military. She was interested for a day or two. Sigh.
