1. Saw it. Dean needs a performance coach.
I liked everything he said, but he does not come across well at all on tv. He doesn't present either authority or likeability. I found myselft thinking, who the heck is this guy and why is he on tv?

6. I still think it was great!
Dean is just being himself. He doesn't need another Naomi whatever her last name was to coach him, a la Gore's campaign. What a disaster that was!

This is the first time that I have EVER donated to a political campaign. In fact, I just signed up for automatic monthly donations and order a t-shirt and mug yesterday. I've never done that before! If I'm doing that, I'm sure a lot of other people will too!

11. I'm happy for you & I understand your excitement
I feel the same way about DK!! Keep plugging your candidate!

I think Dean and Kerry are very lucky to have passionate followers like this.

Huckleberry, is this your first experience getting involved so early in the campaigns? It is for me and I must say it's much more nerve-racking and exciting than I could have imagined. I feel the excitement of the horse-races, like watching the Preakness at Pimlico "There's My Horse!" "You go boy! You go!". Good luck to you! I didn't see the commercial but I hope I get to!

Peace

8. Yeah, he was stiff.
But I'm not looking for an actor. I'm looking for a working president who knows what's bothering me.

If he doesn't loosen up, make it a selling point.

Folksy, friendly and fucking incompetent.....or a man who isn't natural to the limelight and does the actual work?

Declare it a plus before the ravening wolves can insist it's a minus.

As soon as someone says he needs a "performance coach," come back with "We're sick of performances. Let's get down to business with someone who loves his country more than the camera, and more than international cartels."

Don't ever let them make us defensive about ANYTHING.

25. Bush seemed like a regular joe too.
This may not be bad if Dean comes across as a unpolished regular family doctor or whatever. Can't wait to see the ad.

19. I disagree

When I see Dr. Dean, I see a man who is fed up with the softness of his party and the corruptness of the GOP. Often I see pictures of him with his sleeves rolled up, which is heavily symbolic. He's ready to get in the White House and get dirty and bust his ass like his constituency has to do, 24-7; he's not about to take 3 and four week trips to his land out in Crawford,TX when there is work to be done. He often has a determined look on his face: he's determined to get this country back on the right track.....

I love Dr. Dean and everything he stands for; I believe he is the man we want.

22. Didn't see the ad but
I agree with you about Dean and his tv charisma. From the debates I have watched him in, he just doesn't come across as telegenic on camera.

3. I did see it.
He looked a little stiff, but I loved the message, and I loved how Dean stepped right into the camera (and into Bush's face).
Of course, the MTP roundtable minimized Dean's impact, but the fact that they're all talking about him indicates something.
I wish the commercial were running all over the country.

14. Alright, enough with the "stiff" comments. We get it!
I understand that he can look stiff. Could it be that it has something to do with his bad back?!?! If I were him, I'd defuse this "stiff" BS now by saying flat-out "okay, I know I look stiff. I've got a bad back - deal with it. I'm doing the limbo on the inside!"

But seriously, I don't think he comes off near as pedantic and unnatural as Gore. I just wish he'd animate his head a bit more when he talks. Maybe it's difficult for him. Ayway, I'll take "stiff" over "psychotic and incoherent" any day.

15. STIFF??
It was a vast improvement over his Iowa ad. I loved it. Great ad. Great background, great advance into the camera as someone pointed out, and great script.

Great coverage too on MTP (and I don't mind that they got it first at all, since it was national coverage).

I also thought the discussion of Dean on MTP was pretty darned positive, overall.

Go, DEAN!!

18. well I am sure I don't have to tell you
El, that no matter what, I mean Dean could do jsut the most superb commercial in the history of commercials and you-know-whos would show up and criticize.

I gotta laugh though, nothing as pitiful as the completely predicatable human. *yawn*

16. I liked it
Dean may yet implode but he's taking things right
to the Bushies and getting in their face and the
other candidates can't seem to figure out how to do
that. When I wrote a DU article about the Dean meetup
in Philly back in April I was still somewhat skeptical
that he would be able to keep his momentum. But he's
done so and I have to think now that if he's not
the front-runner he's damn close.

23. When people don't admit this, it reminds me of Bill McBride.
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 12:35 PM by tjdee
You know, I heard all this stuff about Bill McBride during the FL election of 2002. How he was going to kick Jeb's butt, blah blah blah.

Then I saw the debate.
He was soft spoken, and kind of bland. And I thought, *this* is the guy who's going to beat Jeb? Umm...dunno about that one...but I figured I wasn't from FL, and others prolly knew better than I about the situation.

Dean obviously has a charisma of some sort, but it is strangely and obviously absent in his television appearances. He is exactly the kind of guy who performance coaches exist for. He could use a little sprucing up, and for people to ignore that flat out as if that would indicate he sucks or is deficient in some way....come on, folks. Everyone could use a little help to be better.

24. The blog says the phones are already buzzing
as a result of the MTP airing. They hadn't planned on bringing extra staff in until Monday and were caught unawares.

I saw it and I think it's clear, honest and sincere. I want someone to stand up to Bush.

26. I thought it was very effective because...
it is the message. It is not the style of the message. And what Dean is saying needs to be said and many people that hear it will appreciate it. Somebody has to challenge Bush. In my opinion, Dean needs to turn it up a notch but, he is still doing more than any other candidate at this time.

31. Michael Dukakis was bright also.
Dean is my pick, but a appearance and persona matter most of all anymore. If Gore had been more relaxed in appearance things would have gone better for him. Chimp is President (or got as many votes as he did) because he comes across as a regular Joe, not a privileged prep school veteran.

If Dean wants to win he will need a coach.

32. The is a fascist dictator in the WH that killed his own people
in league with foreign government provocatuers.

If Dean can't say it, at least he behaves like he knows that it is true.

He will defeat all comers because millions know his cause is just.
