Normal Republicans who are not Extremists are appalled by Bush*
I found this letter so emblematic of what is happening in the country right now that I wanted everyone to see it. Howard Stern has converted, many of our friends and relatives have converted, the tide has turned and I predict a landslide for Kerry. That's my humble opinion based on unscientific, anecdotal evidence.

Now all we need is an honest election.

To the Editor:

Re "Kerry and Dean, All Forgiven, Join to Unseat a Common Foe" (front page, March 11):

In my judgment, the single most important problem America faces appears in the middle of the article. You report that John Kerry said, referring to his Republican critics, "These are the most crooked, you know, lying group I've ever seen, it's scary."

That is exactly the way I have felt for some time, and I am a fourth-generation registered Republican.

I am not accustomed to Republican presidents running record deficits and making up stories about nukes and chemical and biological weapons to justify starting a needless war.

I am 72. I am appalled at the reality of the Medicare bill that's supposed to be so great for us geezers. I am a grandfather. I am not impressed with the clandestine refusal to finance child education.

I could go on, but the point is that John Kerry is right. It is scary. It's very scary.

3. We can emphasize this distinction: Normal Republicans vs. Extremists
The Bush admin is full of Extremists.

Most Normal Republicans, once they learn the facts, do not support Wars based on Lies.

Good for you for educating your co-workers. And Welcome to DU!

4. My main-man fishin partner
Has been a semi-rabid rethug @ times, but recently lowered his guard abit. In calm moments, he has expressed feelings of being fooled by the "lie-house"........ "All I ever wanted to be was a 'moderate republican", is what he tells me in private.....

5. However
those polls that show Whistleass with 85 to 90 percent approval from Republicans are depressing to me.

6. This guy doesn't remember Reagan? How about Bush I?

Republicans have been fearmongering corporate welfare queens for a long time. It's nice to see people take notice of Bush, but the problem goes a hell of a lot deeper than just him.

10. We need to encourage them anyway.
We need them.

I think we can enlighten anyone who has children and who loves their children. That's not a selfish motivation, and that's precisely what's at stake here - the future of everyone's children.

9. I think Reagan was good at hiding them
Reagan was so charming (to them) they let themselves be fooled. Bushco's lying and crookedness are so blatant they have to acknowledge it.

12. I think you are right
I was stunned that people couldn't see that Reagan was acting
(and he was a baaaaad actor) all concerned about regular
people, but he really, really was loved and admired by lots of
people.
