Get the March issue of Harpers!
Unfortunately, they don't post their articles on the Web, so I can't link to them, but here's just a sample of this month's content:

"The Collapse of Globalism" by John Ralston Saul

"Spin Doctors without Borders: How One Washington Lobbyist Administers to Dictatorships" by Elisabeth Eaves

"Voting Democracy Off the Island: Reality TV and the Republican Ethos" Francine Prose

"A Fistful of Peanuts: George W. Bush Raises $3 Million at a Mall" by David Samuels

"Briefings: At Issue in the 2004 Elections" by Luke Mitchell, David Armstrong, and Jon Lackman

This last one is part of an on-going series, and it contains absolutely the best essay on terrorism that I have ever read, as well as an expose of the coddling of Saudi Arabia and an explanation of why polls of Iraqis (or anybody else) can't be trusted.

This magazine is a national treasure!

Lapham's 'The Fog of Self' is worth the subscription.

edit: add 'Last year in which US commercial crude-oil inventories were as low as they were in January: 1975 (April Harper's Index)

5. best magazine out there by far.
I've slashed my mag subscriptions to the bone in the last couple of years, but I'm keeping Harper's forever. Lewis Lapham is god.

6. my hero, Lewis Lapham
Once, about eight years ago, he asked me to write something for Harpers. I was so intimidated by the prospect of putting words in front of him that I totally blocked and couldn't do it. In spite of the fact that my dream for years had been to be able to write something for the magazine I adore. All I have is his letter asking me. Isn't that horrible?

11. Lewis Lapham
I saw him speak at the University of Calgary during the lead up to the war about a year ago. Best speech I've ever seen.
