Poll question: how popular is * in your area?
Edited on Sat Mar-13-04 05:50 PM by ButterflyBlood
i'd put it at a 3. i don't think he has ANY support outside of the outskirts of town where a lot of fundies live and some stupid misguided college Republicans.

87. Plano here too. While shrub support still seems about universal,
the chinks in the armor I see is that the people in my work environment (people who most would characterize as very well off) seem to have a real concern that shrubco will not be reselected, there seems to be a dawning realization of that possibility becoming fact.

Some of these people seem quite happy about the idea that shrubco might be keeping Osama in a freezer to pull out in October. Apparently the ethics involved doesn't trouble them a bit.

I have met like one other person here in my field (aside from my transplant friends) who is against shrubco.

I'm in Richmond, and people practically worship him! Ugh!!

I work w/ a bunch of architects, who you'd think are free-thinking, creative types. I'm one of two people who are Dems in that place.

By the way, dand, my cousin, David Ashe (I posted this yesterday) is running for Congress against the two-term Republican incumbent. Hopefully, if everything goes as planned, he'll be running against him.

49. But he gave Somerset TWO shout outs in his first 2 years in office
Remember when he singlehandedly pulled those guys out of the mine with his bare hands and bulging muscles? Also, who could forget how he bravely flew his fighter jet to the site of the crash of Flight 93 and spearheaded the rescue effort?

Oh wait, neither of those things happened. He just used those events for his own political gain. Of all places, I thought that Somerset would have figured this opportunist out by now.

52. I know the area.
I ski at 7 Springs & Hidden Valley and I'm originally from Western PA. I also did a lot of work in the Somerset/Johnstown/Altoona/Clearfield/Centre County Region, so I know the mindset of the area. It's just so ironic that these areas are some of the most impoverished areas in the Eastern US and yet they still vote for the party that has done them the most damage. I guess the GOP just really appeals to the alcoholic, unemployed, gun totin', hypocritical, Bible thumpin', liberal hatin', gay bashin', redneck "conservatives" of central PA.

Look at the bright side. At least you guys still have an Italian Oven. That place was one of my favorite restaurants until they pulled out of Western PA.

and Windber somehow has greens for mayor and city council. There are Democrats in the greater area but the town of Somerset is a right-wing haven. They even gerrymandered us out of Murtha's (D) district and into Shuster's(R).

62. You're right.
I have a lot of friends that still live in the Johnstown area. I went to college near there. I never realized how Democratic Cambria County was until I looked at the data posted below. As I mentioned before, I grew up in Western PA. I'm well aware of the gerrymandering. I was from Mascara's district. You know what happened with that.

78. Somerset used to be the home of the...
Pennsylvania Church of God Headquarters and Camp Grounds (it's now located in Harrisburg). I know, because my mother used to drag me there every single summer. I absolutely hated it! It *always* rained in Somerset and the only thing black other than me and my family, was all the mud. I believe a lot of people from the Church of God settled there and never left and that may be part of the reason why there are so many Bush* supporters concentrated in that area.

11. What the heck is going to happen at the GOP convention, then?
Talk about occupying hostile territory! How the hell is NYC going to deal with safely blockading the shrub from "first ammendment zones" when the entire city loathes him? I know the RNC debated using a cruise ship exclusively, but now it appears that shrub fancies himself fit to hit Madison Square Garden after all. Is this going to be 1968 revisited?

12. He seems to be pretty popular around here...
because he's "pro-life." I'd like to know how you can argue that someone is pro-life when he and his administration make lie after lie after lie about a country holding WMDs and continue to lie after the evidence overwhelmingly indicates otherwise. And then, the war you lied this country into has produced thousands of deaths and thousands of injuries to innocent civilians. And this administration just dismisses them as "collateral damage." And this administration won't acknowledge the military deaths and do everything in their power to keep any light from exposing the real truth about U.S. casualties.

I just can't understand it. And there's no sense in cramping your brain trying to change these people.

16. Austin Texas
I'd say a 5 here. Its Texas, but Austin is not like the rest of Texas, particularly in the city like where I am. Of the Bush/Gore votes, Bush won Travis County by 52.9% to 47.1%. Since that time his popularity seem to have only dropped, judging from the people I've talk to here. I know realistically it won't happen, but few things would bring me more pleasure than if Bush were to lose Texas like Gore did Tennessee in 2000.

But SHHHHHHH!!!! KEEP A LID ON IT!

I want them to ignore Texas, assume it's in the bag. Meanwhile bush is hemorraghing supporters here. It's great.

Edited on Mon Mar-15-04 04:00 PM by dawn
There's more Dems here than you'd imagine, but it's not as Republican as it is down South or in HB/Westminster. Still, we have a long way to go here in Irvine. So many selfish, greedy pukes. (But at least we have a Democrat as a mayor...although more of a DINO nowadays.)

In Costa Mesa, I'd give Bush a 6.

And in Santa Ana, I'd say Bush has very few fans. !! :)

I have only seen one Bush/Cheney 2004 bumper sticker and that was on an old station wagon with bullet holes decorating the sides and back, and a "Rush was right" bumper sticker on the tail, so I really don't know.
They are dumb as sticks here, so I expect they will do whatever Faux or their fake christian GOP churches tell them to do.

I'd say its probably about 60-40 here, 60 being the ones who would follow Bush off a cliff, 40 being the younger population, and the New College contingent..

Im heavily involved in churchwork and 4H so basically everyone I see is a Bush lover....they dont really know the issues though...most are the type that see Bush praying on TV or hear his stance on abortion and then go out and plaster Bush-Cheney stickers all over their cars....I try to convert as many as I can...

Probably 70% pro-*, but we do have a vocal progressive community.

Most of the fundies did not arrive here until the Pipeline construction began - and imported so many pipeline workers from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana..........who brought their preachers with them.

We have a RABID fundy community, but they are small and, I hope, getting smaller. Seems the fundies can't quite cope with the weather when their neighbors despise them so............

Aside from the few Texans currently here for military, school, or political purposes, and some of the fundies in PG County (yes, the Dem "stronghold" that seems to be shifting to the right), you won't find too many supporters around here.

Of course with this being an area where almost everyone has SOME connection to the govt in their careers, most people aren't very vocal about their beliefs. However, in comfortable surroundings, most people around here are VERY outspoken about *. I've also actually noticed quite a few bumper stickers in the work parking lot lately including: Clark for President, Kerry, Attack Iraq? No, and one of those "Jesus fish" with rocket wings and the word SCIENCE instead of Jesus or IXOYE or Ichthus or Fish or Believe or whatever the fundy symbol du jour is.
