How many DUers take a commuter train to work?
I do it daily and I can guarantee you, we're probably more vlnerable than Spain in this area.

In fact, my wife has asked me if we should start driving to work daily. This would double our commuting time due to traffic conditions.

If they're gonna hit the U.S. again I expect a hit on the rail system.

1. there is zero security
at Grand Central Station. zero.

I saw a report where you have to show an ID to buy a ticket but... somehow I don't believe they've shut down all the TICKET MACHINES.

during the last "elevated terror alert" (btw, has anyone heard the 'color code' mentioned recently) anyone (with or without a ticket) could have boarded any train carrying anything.

the same is true at Port Authority and Penn Station.

and subways? transit buses? please.

you pay your fare and take your chances.

4. Same thing at Union Station in Chicago
I expect to turn on the news some day and see trains in flames somewhere in the U.S.

6. I Started Driving . .
to work after 9/11 when my company was temporarily located in Jersey City, NJ. Even after we moved back to NYC, I continued to drive to Jersey City, take a light rail to the Hudson River and ferry it across. I could have gone back to taking a New Jersey Transit train and PATH train, but I much rather be above ground.

:hippie:

7. I do. Long Island Rail Road
It's vulnerable. There are too many stations and too many riders to protect the system. On top of that, the conductors door is often open on the old trains. It wouldn't be that hard to hijack a train.

8. Is it really worth it to you
to double your commute time and face a much higher risk of being in a traffic accident against the extremely improbable risk of a train bombing?

Here's a scenario to scare you into never leaving home: Terrorists wire explosives onto several major bridges into large cities which carry thousands of cars each day, and then detonate more or less simultaneously.

All of us can sit around and dream up terrible possibilities. It makes much more sense to deal with the actual reality of daily life, and use commuter rail where it makes sense (is cheaper, faster, whatever) than panic because of a train bombing overseas.

People who won't fly since 9/11 because they think every plane is at high risk of being hijacked are equally foolish. Personally, I try to limit my flying because I can no longer tolerate the foolishness of what passes for security, but I know that the air part of my journey is the safest.

I just wish I lived in a city with decent public transportation. These days I'm in a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, and they keep on voting down light rail, the idiots.

9. I'm a bit more worried. . .
. . . since I live in the London area and it's been fingered by the media as the "next possible attack site."
