I think what he is doing is great. He's fundamentally NOT a political "type" like Rush so he can't really Bush bash his whole show. But he spends a decent chunk on it, and some of the bits (like when he and Robin parodied the first wave of shrub commercials) are damn funny.

Don't underestimate the effectiveness of Stern. The fear of censorship by the FCC/Shrubco is definitely a real wedge issue that can bring voters our way.

From my reading of threads on DU, what I am gathering from stories of people who are usual Repubs who either aren't voting or going Dem this year, there are a couple of threads:

1) Economic situation, either with respect to jobs/joblessness or fiscal irresponsibility (budget busting deficit).

2) Iraq War, we were lied to about WMD.

But there are definitely those who don't feel strongly about either of those things (i.e. a typical 19-20 year old Stern fan) who DO care about censorship. Many people are apolitical or don't care much until something happens to them, i.e. laid off. Well, the threat of losing your favorite morning rush hour AM entertainment show to censorship, though it might seem trivial, is still a significant impact on your life, enough to make people realize, HEY, this is REALLY BAD!

One of the things Stern did this week was brilliant, he led off his show with no show--just played some lame music and then had a "panel discussion" about FCC censorship, to show his listeners what their life would be like if Mikey Powell and Shrubco got their way.
