Spanish opposition could pull troops from Iraq

MADRID, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Opposition leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero thrust Iraq to the centre of Spain's election campaign on Thursday, saying he would pull out Spanish troops if the United Nations does not take charge in Iraq by mid-year.

The comments mark a change in position by the Socialist leader, who had said previously that while he opposed the Iraq war, it would be a mistake to withdraw Spanish troops now.

The Socialists lag in the polls behind the ruling Popular Party before Spain's March 14 general election.

The government of Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar staunchly backed U.S. President George W. Bush's decision to invade Iraq, despite widespread opposition among Spaniards, and sent 1,300 troops to Iraq after the war.

3. After the bombing I would not be surprised

if he had a change of heart and pulled the troops now before any more bombing hit Spain, just my opinion.

4. The Socialists have apparently won

90% of Spanish people were against the War on Iraq.

Then their gov't lied to them, about responsibility for the bombings.

The Spanish people are much better informed than Americans. Also, their voter turnout was about 74-75%.

5. The Socialists have gotten a few more seats

But not a clear majority. The conservatives still have a large contingent. So, a lot of those supposed 90% against the war still voted for the right wing stooges. I guess they weren't all that much against the war in reality. Or all that upset with the lies and bombings.
