What happened to the 1970's rhetoric that we would be independent

of the need for foreign oil within 30 years? Who remembers the gas embargo and the long lines of cars and the resolve that was cut down by post Carter policies of the rightwing oil nut cartel kiss asses?

Lots of us know why we are in the shape we are in today, and for all the dealing, lying and stealing, let's hope it doesn't get worse.

The early eighties saw the oil exploration and production that was started by the oil price rises of the seventies finally come on line. The North Sea oil fields is the example that most quickly comes to mind, but there are others. So we had a lot of oil coming from folks like the UK, Norway and Mexico - much friendlier nations.

We have enjoyed some 15 - 20 years of what is dirt cheap oil. Frankly, given inflation, gasoline is still a bargain. Wellll, the cheap and easy means of extracting the oil out of the ground are about shot in many many producing fields. When they have to start using secondary methods like Water or gas injection to force the oil out, or even tertiary methods like steam injection, prices will rise, lines might form and we'll talk about this again until the Caspian Sea fields are well up and running.
