Does anyone remember Ferraro and Mondale?

Remember they never touched in public until after they lost the election. It was a big deal when they finally hugged. :eyes:

I was just watching Kerry on CSPAN. He hugs everyone and is very physically affectionate. He hugs many female politicians and male politicians. All of our candidates do and did. So why did American society change?

I think this belongs in the GD. sorry mods.

2. No, no - Mondale is a Minnesotan -

and a scandinavian besides. That explains it all. You can't hug if you're from there because all the layers of clothing make your arms too stiff - they kinda stick out to your sides. Also the potential huggee is too big around from all the layers of clothes that you couldn't hug them anyway unless you're Dennis Rodman.

don't hug anyone except immediate family members. I'm serious.

I grew up among Scandinavians here, and when I went to the East Coast and found myself among all the emotional and demonstrative Italians, Jews, Irish, Puerto Ricans, African-Americans, and Greeks, I just about went into culture shock.

Then after nine years on the East Coast, I moved back to Minnesota for three years, and my relatives kept telling me, "Don't be so EMOTIONAL!"

8. I think I missed your joke

at that time everyone assumed that a man and woman couldn't be colleagues and affectionate without it implying an affair. They were not having an affair. I'm just glad that women and men, men and men, women and women, can be affectionate because they like each other.

I do think that someone like Kerry, *, Gore had to learn to be affectionate. It was not a typical behavior when they were younger. It is normal now but not 25 years ago.

At first, I theorized that there might have been a LBN thread about an affair.

Then as I read further, the theme of affection and social norms became apparent.
