At least to me it is obscure. Years ago, I went to Disneyland and saw the Animatrons, I found it fascinating that Lincoln stood up and gave a speech; it was great yet eerie.
I cannot recall the speech, but the gist of it was that the US would not be crushed by some foreign power. There was too much distance, (of course this was before ICBM's). But rather, the US would fall to an enemy within its borders. The enemy would be those that despised the liberty offered to others, and believed in a structure of government that utilized the populace and government to enhance their personal riches.
I'm not saying that Lincoln was some kind of seer, but it seems to me, we are teetering on the brink of destruction. I do not like to overact to situations, and I'm not fond of reading things into situations that may not more than coincidence, but this administration si really getting stranger than anything most sane people could have thought up. While I have always thought that this administration was evil, I had no idea the depths to which they would go to destroy the very thing they say they love so much.
"Terrorists"? OK, let's cut back the Liberties of the population, that should stop the terrorists. (What kind of logic is that)?
"Well nobody squealed, so let's see if we can get into the private lives of the citizens". (Patriot II, once they saw that the masses were cowed).
A slight rumble from the progressives is made, but nothing with any mettle.
Each day these people are in power, the country goes farther into a hellish existence. It should not be forgotten that the Gestapo in Germany was actually a small number of individuals. The largest asset they had, were citizens that thought they could avoid arrest and internment;if they sent someone else instead. A network of neighborhood spies grew around the Gestapo center. Once an individual was caught in the net, they could generally lose whatever hope they had.
Just as the "Patriot Act" took form, so did the Nazification of Germany. Sedition acts were passed with great ceremony, and millions died. Let us remember, not just Jews, but Gypsies, Slavs, homosexuals, dissidents and people that had the great offense of "Not Being Patriotic Enough".
Lincoln was correct, the failure in this country will not come from outside enemies, but rather the 'domestic' ones. The ones we forget are out there. They are not 'nuts', they are not religious fanatics or survivalists; they are some of our neighbors and classmates. They are those that fix the plumbing and put our electrical systems into place; they are those that really believe, "that there is a limit to freedom". Of course, not everyone is that pliable, but enough are, to make sure we feel the pain of domestic occupation.
As bush & Co continue to rip the Constitution to shreds, we must remain vigilant and prepared to cast down the arguments of those that would forfiet freedom and liberty, for a few hours of false security.
