2. Oh, a hefty fine coming their way?
NOT. Remember the #1 rule: Republicans can do no wrong. And if they do, IT WASN'T THEIR FAULT.

The bystander was probably yelling at a picture of Clinton, which would justify everything.

3. Cable is not the public airwaves?
I think I heard Michael Powell say something to that effect. I'm not sure what the difference is.

5. The FCC, I believe
has no oversight of cable networks.

9. Powell is full of Bush*
The only difference between broadcast and cable is how it gets connected to your TV set.

You pay to get cable, yet all the cable chanels air the same amount of commercials. Commercials are there to pay for everything.

Sounds public to me.

14. Nope...
the broadcast networks "buy" a license from the government to use the public airwaves, which is a set of frequencies owned by the public. Companies must agree to certain restrictions in return for being granted a license to use these airwaves.

Cable does NOT use these airwaves, and therefore is much less restricted in what they can broadcast.

4. Where's Michael Powell? I can tell you where he and and what he's doing..
Edited on Sun Mar-21-04 09:05 AM by HypnoToad
But let's leave it as this: Michael Powell is engaging in a "friendly visit" at Rupert Murdoch's mansion...

In all seriousnss, FOX just pulled a Bono. If Bono gets slapped, so should FOX. Equally. Period. Otherwise, it's another example of the hypocracy our repuke-controlled fascist state is.

Hypocracy: Amalgamated word composed of "hypocrist" and "democracy".

6. Not the first time
Probably once or twice a year, the live mics at sports events pick up someone uttering something considered unsuitable for broadcast.

Although no one seemed to mind when one of the characters on General Hospital muttered "shithead" under his breath. On broadcast TV, in the prime soap opera hour.

It's also not the first time Bono has said, "fuck", during a live awards show. He did it years ago, promising to "continue to do their part to fuck up the mainstream." The press was more interested in Joan Rivers breaking the taboo associated with using "goddamn" on broadcast TV.

7. The congressional bill you can't read on the air (see last paragraph)
To amend section 1464 of title 18, United States Code, to provide for the punishment of certain profane broadcasts, and for other purposes. (Introduced in House)

8. Sorry, Guys, it's Cable, not OTA....
FCC figures since they only have jurisdiction over what goes through the air, not the wire, (wrong, they have jurisdiction, just like they have jurisdiction over telecom matters) they could skull-fuck nuns on FAUX cable news and that'd be OK.

Never mind that only something like 10% of US households don't have cable...

It's all smoke and mirrors, "SEE! We ARE 'doing something' about nekkid titties and 'Fuck'....We fined CC a megabuck, didn't we?"

12. Very good!
I can't help thinking the 'original' Michael Powell would be appalled at the censorship of his namesake.

13. It's not a "loophole"
the theory is that the public airwaves are limited, and owned by the public. The government, on behalf of the public, issues licenses to broadcasters to use these airwaves. Hence, broadcast TV and radio are regulated by the FCC.

Cable is different. They do not use the public airwaves, and therefore the FCC doesn't have much power, if any, to control what goes out on cable.

11. And in today's editorial section in the MPLS Star Tribune
There was a letter from a reader incensed that the newpaper quoted someone saying "fricking" saying that it was just as obscene as that other word. (I assume the reader meant "fucking")

The newspaper's response was an interesting etymology of "frigging" and "fricking" and concluded that "fricking" is in the same category as "gosh" as a substitute for "god" and therefore acceptable.

15. Wow! I'm surprised to hear that
they were able to squeeze something not related to terrorism, like the implosion of a stadium - unless it was to demonstrate how Al Qaeda might blow us all to kingdom come at some sporting event. Seriously, they should change their name to The Terror Channel.

16. squeeze it in??? HA
they ACTUALLY started the program 2 minutes early....screwing with the commercial break in order to have time to set up the blast before the 7 am. ignition. one of the hosts REALLY likes to see things go boom..fall down and never misses an implosion.

it was pretty cool til the dust obscured the view.
