The scene in Fresno this weekend may well have given us a preview of the shape of this summer's presidential campaign:

What the headline doesn't explain -- nor does the story until you get down deep into it -- was that the rally was targeted by members of the Free Republic (whose role as far-right "transmitters" I have discussed previously), which is based in Fresno.

by the way I've watched dozens of peaceful activists get roughed up and arrested in my city. I'm more concerned about the "Miami Model", pepper spray, rubber bullets,free-speech pens and plastic handcuffs. This is the real bullying IMO. It's the policies behind this treatment that I feel bullied by and violence is not an option in dealing with this (unless of course someone likes living behind bars)

The lawsuits against these tactics are slowly progressing through the courts. There are abundant test cases already filed about obscene use of force against peaceful protesters. It's just going to take time for them to circulate through the calendar and get to trial.

Speaking of obscene, wait till police forces see the huge sums the police are going to be paying out to the winners of these lawsuits against them.

in LA that for larger demonstrations like the upcoming RNC demos in NYC, money is put into the budget specifically for lawsuits. So in many cases they have already planned to violate protesters rights and paying lawsuits down the line is just part of the "cost".

In smaller towns such as my own, where crowds are smaller it is different. But nobody seems to want to file a lawsuit. It's been discussed but the lawyers discourage it.

In the case of the many arrests we have experienced (almost entirely since the Iraq war began) none of the charges were dropped and the RW judges always come up with a guilty verdict, usually after negotiating a reduced charge. Generally there has been a $50 fine. At least one of our lawyers is with the ACLU. Because of the judges involved the lawyers tell their clients to plead guilty to a lesser charge.

We have a great activist community but this has really been dampening spirits.
There are many people here who actively train in non-violence, many who protest at the SOA. There has not been violence on the protester's part.
There is no doubt that the police seem to be following a harsher policy, most likely related somehow to the "homeland security" mindset.

Having said all this, I believe that Ken the peace activist in the story, did the wise thing by asking the police to deal with this imbalanced freeper. If he had decked the guy, he still would have been arrested, had a weaker case in court and probably upset some participants in the rally. Many anti-war activists especially the old school types, practice a disciplined form of non-violence such as was taught by Dr. King. As you know, MLK had to deal with his share of bully-boy rednecks also.

You don't need to "smash faces." It has never once come to that with me and the 5 D cell Maglite that visibly hangs from my belt in situations where there is potentially a problem. The minute they understand that you do not intend to be moved from your spot by their blather, they go away. They rant and choke on the froth they had been spewing only moments before as they leave, too.



I had a situation in high school where I had been the "little guy" all through school, and finally went "insane" and stood up to a particular offensive lineman bully type one day in Chemistry class by picking up an aluminum lab stand and making it clear if I was hit by him, I would be using lab equipment to defend myself. He never bothered me again. I've never had a problem with loudmouth bullies since then, and that was 25 years ago.

If you make it clear to bullying idiots that you are prepared to deal with threats of a physical attack with a legally appropriate response that has way more force then they have conditioned themselves to deal with, they go away.

When my brother was a young teen some guys were after him. He told me he feared them (especially one) cause they were "crazy". I pointed out what it was he feared, not their size or anything but the crazy part. I told him he only had to be more crazy than them (at least appear to be). Since then he's never feared another living soul. In fact I pity the fool who messes with him or his loved ones.

As long as they don't get too close, the best thing to do is to ignore them. In some cases, they don't expect dialogue and a response can shut 'em up. At the rally in Gainesville, FL, one guy called me a thieving communist anti-American traitor for protesting. All I said was "show me where the WMDs are and how Iraq was a threat to us, and I'll lay down my sign and leave!" Surprisingly, he kept his mouth shut after that.

You stand your ground, and make it clear they will be dealing with far more then they bargained for if a bully escalates a situation into physical violence.

I guess I would believe in using "self-defense" martial arts techniques appropriately. However, the people I know who have learned martial arts are constantly having to use their training to defend themselves. Martial arts training doesn't provide deterrance to bullying thugs. It's only "intimidating" once a fight has already started. I've had a maglite, or something like it for decades, and I don't have to get into fights. I don't go looking for trouble, and when it comes around me, it's clear I'm prepared to end trouble. Consequently, I don't get into fights.

I can't recommend maglites enough. They are legal to carry everywhere. They are great flashlights when you need one, and they have the effect of ending fights before the first blow is thrown.

This has actually changed my mind in regards to behavior toward police at rallies.

It certainly seems they had a personal issue with the rally organizer and that should not have bled over into their professional(?) conduct.

Tactically, the only reason you go into Fresno, Tulsa, Mobile, etc. to protest is if you are looking to file suit over the predictable police over-reaction to the protest that will result, or you are looking for media coverage of overuse of force against protesters.

The actual problem is that the Fresno County Sheriffs and their associates have been the subject of a tort claim filed by Peace Fresno for the infiltration perpetrated by these agencies. This arrest of the least violent, non-confrontational, safety minded, church going elementary school teacher was no less than a retaliatory and dissent chilling measure complete with threats too infuriating too relate here. The FPD are not the lowbrow firehose wielding dog unleashing types you portray them to be. I would suggest for the benefit of all you refrain from inflammatory comments based in speculation. I think most of us have seen the pictures (with identification) of the riot staged during the vote count.

Make as many copies as you can, and hand them out at fairs, parks, grocery stores, staple them to any surface you can.

The Actions they have been doing to the weekly ongoing peace vigils every week in the Southern California area, including planning to attack the peace vigils and peace marches on March 20, 2004 all around the world - including the one in Hollywood this past weekend shows Pre-Planned, Pre-Meditated Forethought and Planning to Harass and DELIBERATELY STALK OUR PEACE PEOPLE AND Our Peace Marches Around the World Ahead of Time – as Early as December 6 th of Last Year.

These Trouble-making, Law-Violating, Pre-planning War-Mongering Bushite Terrorists who Threaten, Follow, Stalk, Intimidate, Harass, Attack, Scream At Non-stop Must Be Stopped.

They Are Very Serious About Continuing Their Attacks and Stalking of the Peace People Because The Police Are Not Doing Anything About It and It Must Be Stopped.

They Keep Trying to “Escalate” the Encounters with us. I can tell you numerous instances.

And, since I have been out there every week for a year now vigiling with signs on street corners, please listen. My experience just may help make the difference for you - wherever you hold your peace events.

Understand that in spite of all they have put me through, it does not scare me in the least bit.

Instead - it just does the opposite - it MOTIVATES ME TO KEEP DOING MY WORK FOR PEACE AND TO KEEP GOING.

In some cases, they may have a police buddy friend they pre-plan this attack on us ahead of time to set you up.

You Must Know Their Psychology and How they are communicating, so you can be prepared.

When you are Prepared for them and they don’t show up, fine.

But do not be caught off-guard without being prepared for them so that you do not react from a place of fear, but instead from a place of calm and centered-ness which is hard to do when they are around.

That is the total key: preparation ahead of time will help you come from a place of security and not fear.

You must keep your calm at all times and control your fears by doing certain things ahead of time.

Specifically, a certain group of staunch harassing Bushite Terrorists - whose leader is a girl named Laura Schmidt, has continually harassed for over 1 year now our peace vigils in the San Fernando Valley area. We know who they are. And I know it when I see them.

They tried in vain this weekend – on 3 Separate Occasions and Incidents, including trying to lead our march in front of us with Derogatory signs, calling us "commies" and other names.

I know of which I speak and of what Evil Energy these people are.

I even sent a GULF WAR 1 VETERAN – MILITARY SEARGEANT FOR PEACE – Seargent Hadady to talk to them to get them to stop the level of escalation they have been getting away with for over a year now and you know what?

He tried for 30 minutes – to talk normally and calmly with them about what happened to him and his position against the war. Know what they did?

They spit at him, they Screamed NON-STOP the whole time, calling him names, disrupted his attempt at a conversation throughout the entire process and after 30 minutes of their insults and their rude behavior,

He warned me and us vigilers about them.

These are NOT Rational, NOT Normal people. These people are definitely VIOLENT.

Now that this has been said, do not be afraid - be prepared!

They are just trying to promote violence and all they are there to do is to have a physical violent confrontation.

KEY: THEY DO NOT HAVE A MESSAGE. IF THEY REALLY DID, THEY WOULD NOT WASTE THEIR TIME WITH ATTACKING YOU.

Believe me!

If they had a message they Really Cared About Getting Out to the Public - without Embarrassing Themselves, they would NOT be Wasting Their Time Stalking, Attacking or Harassing our Peace People.

The fact is that they believe in a violent lifestyle and their whole message is to preach violence. That is all.

Remember to bring and STRESS THIS POINT TO THE POLICE (if you have an encounter with them):

If these "Bush Terrorists" have a message they really care about informing the public on, then

WHY ARE THEY WASTING TIME TRYING TO ATTACK AND FOLLOW AND HARASS PEACE PEOPLE AND AT PEACE EVENTS?

WOULDN’T THEY HAVE SOME IMPORTANT MESSAGE THEY ARE FOCUSED ON GETTING OUT TO THE PUBLIC AND PUT THEIR OWN PRO-VIOLENT EVENTS ON?

KEY: WHY WOULD THEY WASTE TIME HARASSING YOU IF THEIR MESSAGE IS SO REALLY IMPORTANT?

You can not talk to them.

If they will not respect a military seargent who served his country, they will not respect you as a citizen.

Again, be prepared to deal with their lunacy ahead of time. You do not have to be afraid or be a victim - just be PREPARED.

However, they are serious and not to be taken lightly.

They have Stalked our Peace Vigils, Tried on numerous occasions to stand on our side of the street with HUGE POLES AND STICKS – THE POLICE DO NOTHING ABOUT IT WHILE THEY MAKE US PEACE PEOPLE REMOVE ANY POLES AND STICKS FROM OUR SIGNS.
( They can be used as weapons and the police let the war-mongers have their sticks and poles – along with their tempers ).

I have Documentation on Camera of these War-mongering Bush Terrorists’ actions as well as tape recording.

SOME SIMPLE RULES OF SAFETY FOR PEACE PEOPLE:

1. NEVER – AND I MEAN NEVER – GO ALONE. NOT EVEN TO YOUR CAR.

They followed a friend of mine to her car and almost succeeded in preventing her from getting into her car while making anti-semetic remarks to her (and, ironic that the girl doing it - Laura Schmidt - is "supposed" to represent the Jewish Defense League!)

2. ALWAYS CARRY A CAMERA AND IF YOU CAN, A SMALL TAPE RECORDER IF POSSIBLE.
3. HAVE THEM EASILY READY TO USE - NOT TUCKED AWAY SOMEWHERE.
4. IT IS BEST IF YOU HAVE A CAMERA BAG HANGING AROUND YOUR NECK - SO EVERYONE CAN SEE IT.
5. TAKE EXTRA BATTERIES FOR THEM.
6. DON’T BE AFRAID TO USE THEM AND DO NOT ENGAGE IN TALK WITH THEM.
7. JUST SIMPLY REPEAT AND SAY “DOCUMENTING THE EVIDENCE” – OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
8. DO NOT "ENGAGE" - WITH THEM AT ALL. THE KEY WORD HERE IS "ENGAGE" - THAT MEANS DO NOT RESPOND VERBALLY OR TALK WITH THEM.

THAT IS THEIR SET-UP TRAP AND SET-UP PLAN - TO ENGAGE YOU.

SOMETIMES THEY HAVE PRE-SET THIS ARRANGEMENT AHEAD OF TIME WITH THE LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENTS.

9. OBEY ALL LAWS. BE ON YOUR BEST BEHAVIOR.
10. DO NOT TRY TO RATIONALIZE WITH THESE PEOPLE.
11. THEY ARE NOT NORMAL - REALIZE THAT AND ACCEPT IT.

You Need to Be Ready For Them - Just in Case They Show Up.

KEY: DOCUMENT THE EVIDENCE. AS MUCH EVIDENCE AS YOU CAN.

1. USE MANY CAMERAS AND / OR VIDEO IF POSSIBLE.
WHEN FILMING THEM, DO NOT SPEAK. BUT IF THEY ARE LOUD AND IF YOU HAVE TO SAY SOMETHING, JUST SAY "DOCUMENTING THE EVIDENCE" OVER AND OVER AGAIN. SMILE.

2. USE MANY WITNESSES.

3. USE TAPE RECORDERS.

4. HAVE THEM READY.

AND THE GOLDEN RULE: DO NOT ENGAGE.

In fact, just last week at the start of the weekend, I had to record a Police Officer that was harassing a Veteran protesting in front ot the Veterans' Cemetary here in L.A. - I did not say 1 word - I just took out my tape recorder and let him see I was recording everything being said. It kept my Veteran friend from going to jail for some b.s. charge and he was able to exercise his first amendment rights.

All because I was ready and prepared for these lunatics.

YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT AND WHO YOU ARE DEALING WITH.

Thanks for posting those tips for other DUers to read. It sounds like some really sensible advice and if followed could save some grief on the part of an innocent protester who allows himself/herself to get a bit overheated when dealing with one of these nutbars. Up here in Canuckistan we are fortunate that we don't have to put up with this type of harassment (although we have our own share of right wing loony tunes as well).

Edited to add: VFP when you accumulate enough posts to enable you to start your own threads it might be a good idea to post your suggestions on how to deal with freeper disruptors in a new thread in the Activism/Events Forum. Unfortunately a post way down in a long thread like this one tends to get overlooked and since this thread is already > 100 posts it's also liable to sink out of sight and disappear into the archives. Since the A/E forum is slower moving your very useful tips won't dissappear of the front page as quickly.

This is in my experience in practice very difficult (remember itching and finally losing it during a solidarity march which was attacked by neo-Nazis this summer in Stockholm), maybe never try to reason is more adequate. I am the first to admit that peaceful demonstrations are superior, but boy did that skinhead look surprised when I "replied" to his glass bottle throwing...

It is important that Freepers or whatever shade of brown they come in realises that democrats (on both sides of the Atlantic) demonstrates peacefully by choice - not because of fear of violence.

I walked between the jack-booted police, who mostly were tense, but fair, and the 'Black Brigade' famous for disrupting G8s in Italy and Evian ('riots' were in Geneva, no one bothered to go to Evian) last summer, as well as the WEF (Back when possible).

I had the fortune to speak to the Iraqi leader of the Federation of Workers Councils and Unions, which is having a credibility issue, as they're voted into power by, get this!: the IRAQI PEOPLE.

So BremerCo (CPA and Iraqi (Chalubi) Nat'l Council) don't recognize them...
