The truth about David Evans , Jr. ' death (Iraq death/977th MP Co)
Edited on Tue Mar-23-04 03:41 AM by Solly Mack
For almost 10 months, Esther Macklin sought answers to the most basic of questions: How and why did her son, Pvt. David Evans Jr., die?
She knew he was killed May 25 in an explosion at an Iraqi munitions dump he was guarding.

But Friday, she learned how: through horseplay by fellow soldiers.

One of two soldiers entering a building full of munitions lighted some fuse bundles, and that set off a series of explosions. Evans was killed instantly, and one of the two surviving soldiers now faces homicide and manslaughter charges in his death.

I knew about this at the time of his death but wasn't allowed to speak publically about it until now. They will be charging the second soldier involved- who was also badly injured and still in recovery.

Just thought those of you who have been a great support throughout this ordeal would want to know.

1. That must have been a hard burden to carry
Knowing these things and being unable to speak of them. A horrible and tragically stupid event. It really sucks, because at times like these nothing you can do or say can really help the survivors, like dude's mom. But at least we can let the survivors know we care, and in that they may find some solace.

You were over there? Thank you for your service to our country. It shames me you were fraudulently sent. But in this no dishonor adheres to those who served.

2. My husband is over there. This is his company (977th)
They are due back in 12 days.

Knowing how Evans died increased my worry ten-fold. Not only did I have to worry about my husband getting shot or blown up from one side, I had to worry about his fellow soldiers killing him. Until he reaches my arms, I'll continue to have that worry.
