Ex-DLC Bigwig caught donating $ to w
(Emphasi mine...)

TAPPED
Continuous commentary from The American Prospect Online.

July 31, 2003

WHEN YOU'VE LOST THE NEW REPUBLIC . . . Tapped's new favorite thing is the Federal Election Commission database where you can type in anyone's name and see if he or she has donated money to political candidates or parties. (Tapped's old favorite thing was The Washington Post's home buyer database, where you could learn how much your neighbors spent for their apartments.)…Michael Steinhardt, former Democratc Leadership Council stalwart and part-owner of The New Republic, gave $2,000 to Bush-Cheney '04 Inc. on June 20, 2003.

Now, we know that there's often little direct relationship between a magazine owner's politics and the views of its writers, but it is a notable thing when one of the more prominent New Democrats around starts financing the continuation of the Bush administration.

11. Because they did the right thing and CAVED to the left.
The writing is on the wall for them, the left has its strength. Though he never liked Kerry's liberalism, From knows he's going to win.

5. I don't know why anyone would be suprised by this
These guys would prefer Smirk to remain in office and accordingly will offer up Holy Joe as the Dem nominee....at least that's what they are trying (unsuccessfully) to do.

Has anyone asked them this question directly?

12. Silly question.
These guys/gals are staunch democrats. They just come at you from the middle, not the left.

9. Good find Jim Sagle - thanks for posting that info
That's an ugly connection between the DLC and Bush. I wonder if there's more like this or if it's an isolated case.

13. I think it's an exception, not the rule.
But I'd bet it's not isolated, either.

.....just get a list of people connected to the DLC and go to Open Secrets.org, click on the Whos Giving tab at the top of the screen, and select Donor Lookup!

22. This sounds like a Lyndon LaRouche fable.
What role did Steinhardt have with the DLC? He's said to be a "stalwart", but I'm a bit skeptical, being as the oldest references to this on the net go back to Lyndon LaRouche's website (where he also holds no title other than "stalwart".

I'm not buying it.

24. Steinhardt is part-owner of The New Republic, the DLC "third-way" magazine
He is "stalwart" enought to start a political magazine and to join and donate alot of money to the DLC.

I didn't, and never would, reference LaDouchebag. So your comment is irrelevant.

27. Certain DLC members are Republican operatives within the Democratic Party!
It has to be. They were brought in to "neutralize" the Democratic Party. I often think that this might be true. Does anybody wonder about this?
