I call it the Orrin Hatch Gambit - get out in front of a bombshell by quickly voicing your feigned fears that "IF this is true, then I have serious reservations about X (fill in name of rethug in question)." Then, three to four weeks later, do a complete 180º on the matter, stating "now that I've seen ALL the evidence, I am fully satisfied that X has done nothing wrong." As a kicker, provide the knowing wink and nod that X has actually gotten away with something quite serious, which - rather than being slimy - speaks loads about the political savvy of X.
