I caught my 16yo watching the Unity Dinner last night!
No kidding! There is hope for the youth of America!

He crashed on the couch and tried to flip the teevee to some crap after Daily Show. Normally, we'd send his butt off to bed at this late hour, but no school today. Anyway, I said no-way Jose, that I was watching NightLine. He grunted and flipped the channel, and got up to leave...but stayed long enought to catch the opening...and it caught his interest. He stayed and watched the whole thing, bitching and moaning throughout like a real wonk! "How the hell can they do that?" It really got him fired up.

So anyway, afterwards, we chat a bit about the evil GOP, and he takes off to his room and his own teevee. I saw the post on DU later about the Unity Dinner re-run and switched it on. About halfway through, I went to the fridge for a lovely beverage, and heard this weird echo from the television. But it wasn't an echo at all, it was the sound of HIS television in his bedroom in unison with the big television on my other side! The kid is laying in bed watching freaking Bill Clinton at 1 in the morning instead of Tech TV or Comedy Central or Adult Swim...

It was a proud moment! A perfect cap to an emotional day in politics yesterday!

11. *grins*
Yep, I've been a Dem since I was old enough to understand politics. My parents are both liberals (also public school teachers), and they raised me to be a liberal as well. And you know what? I'm damn glad they did.

To parents! :toast:

4. If a kid can do this, why can't just one of those "stupid white men"
so to speak do the same?? If just once one of them would stop freaking that all the big money they earn (how many are making crap wages because of the republicans)was going to some welfare queen and realize that they are fast slipping into welfare terrority, it would finally be the end of the republicans.. Duping these dopes is what keeps them in power. Maybe if they would listen to the speeches like your child did without Limbaugh edit, they might start feeling very funny inside and realize how badly they have been manipulated. Oh, and I think somewhere in your son there had to be a worry and a concern about the future or none of this would have appealed to him AND if he came back for more then it means he found comfort last night-----hope a DNC person reads your post and realizes they have a strong message.

8. Ah, you know you've succeeded as a parent!
When my sons were growing up, we always had lively political discussions around the dinner table. So now my boys are in college, and I find out my younger son got his name in his city newspaper for throwing a huge fuss about the GOP trying to stop college Democrats from voting on campus. Then he instigated a march over to the county courthouse to ask the judge to issue same-day absentee ballots so all Democrats could vote on campus. I had no idea I was turning out a campus activist! (Who, to this day, loves to argue with Republicans.)

10. Atman - I'm grateful to your son and all the young people
Edited on Fri Mar-26-04 10:48 AM by madmax
they are our future.

Also.

More than once I've found myself looking at a person of color and silently thanking them for the huge sacrifices they've made and the courage they've shown in their lives to help make America better for ALL of us.

12. DeepModem Mom agrees with all who say that good parenting
results in children with empathy, who care about others, their country, and the world's people. I raised two liberal Democrats, one of them despite being born a Gen X "Reagan baby." One of my proudest moments was hearing her tell a Republican friend, when asked why she and her parents consistently voted Democratic, against their economic interests, that "thinking" people are Democrats because they care about others less fortunate than themselves, and they care about what we should be as a country. My Gen Y child gives me hope for that generation, personifying early studies of this age group: blind to color when it comes to race, global in thinking, skeptical of consumerism and the ads that fuel it, fascinated by the continent of Africa, environmentally concerned, and possibly possessing some social conscience passed on to them by their Boomer parents.

Atman, you are raising a fine son --
