CNN: "Offshoring: The Argument Rages On "

Author David Kilpatrick refers to the "virulent anti-business attitude" found an in e-mail received from one of his his readers, who "like so many, he misunderstands economic realities"...then states:

"More logical is the following note I received from a writer of Indian ancestry:

"Major American companies get most of their business from the WORLD. It was convenient for Americans to enjoy record growth and prosperity when the world sent their huge investment dollars to the U.S., purchased tickets to watch Hollywood movies, and purchased American products. During these very same boom years, 99.9% of Americans completely ignored the plight of poor workers in the Third World who complained of illegal farm subsidies and globalization issues."

The logical discourse from the writer of Indian ancestry essentially goes on to say that if Americans can't show why they should be paid more for a job that someone from India is willing to do less, they should shut up and go into new industries or back to school to learn new skills. And because we didn't care about poor Third World workers during the "dot com" boom (in the writer's opinion), turnabout is fair play and the Third World is completely ignoring OUR plight in 2004. Charming.

Sounds like a logical writer of Indian ancestry who's on the Bush payroll.

1. India is no third world country. They are the 3rd biggest
industrialized nation on the planet. I forget who's #2. For the last 20 years Indian workers have been brought over here to do computer programming because they are highly educated and they speak English, to some extent. Now companies have figured out how to ship the jobs to India.

I don't think I would classify China as third world either. Russia is another country where a few jobs are going. I even get emails from Russian companies looking for computer work. This guy is mixing applies and apples and calling them oranges.

2. Here's a reality check for those people who are pro-outsourcing.

Yes, there may be no heavy regulation on workers, but there is also no heavy regulation when it comes to selling your products. When I went down to visit family in a foreign country about fifteen years ago, there were two video rental stores that we visited that were operated right inside someone's garage. And inside, there were wall to wall pirated videos. Titles were handwritten on the boxes. Nothing fancy. And the clientele was something that Blockbuster would envy.

This is the kind of thing that you can expect when you establish your corporations in foreign markets. You will lose the ability to control the blackmarket. And don't expect Americans to make up the difference. We'll all be in bread lines.
