Election Day Strategy
I have been feeling depressed about my wasted vote in Texas and am asking all DU'ers input on something. I would love to travel to Florida or other battleground state during election and contribute as much energy as possible to defeating Bush. I think if everyone on this board did that we could potentially make a difference. I believe two or three states were decided by a few thousand votes or less. I was thinking of driving a rental van through low income neighborhoods and offering rides to the polls. Can I do this legally? Does anyone have better suggestions? I would be interested in talking with anyone that would like to help organize some grass roots efforts in doing something like this. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd love to do the same, since JFK2 is all but certain to carry Illinois. Any ideas?

3. something more than cold calling
I would rather be more proactive. Thats why I would like to actually drive people to the polls. If we can increase the African-American voter turnout in some of these states by 10% it could make the difference.

2. You can drive anyone you want in your car to vote . . .
My dad has done it for years for elderly people and those without cars. You just cannot go into the ballet booth with them (like I saw two people do during the last election). (story). I was waiting in line and this man and woman (say in their 40s-50s) were literally dragging this little ole lady in to vote. She could not support her own weight and looked confused and dazed. I was watching them and a poll worker noticed me looking at them and he walked over to them and told them that they could not stand behind the voting booth with her. Now she may have been Democrat, I haven't a clue; however, this woman did not know what she was doing.

Also, I once was listening to Rush OxyContin Limbaugh, and a lady called in. It was before the last presidential election. She stated that her son was mentally retarded (Down's Syndrome); however, they voted absentee ballet for him but they go to their precinct to vote. She stated that they voted Republican because they were sure he would want to vote the way they did. I was shocked. I couldn't believe Limbaugh let that across the airways. He never said anything (I actually think he stopped and thought about what she was saying), and went on to another topic or caller (cannot remember).

Now when I registered to vote (when I was 18 in 1977), I had to go to the registrar's office, raise my right hand, and swear an oath. Now you can do it on line, whatever. These people probably did this for their son (who is not actually voting and does not even know they are doing it or what they are doing) To me this is an illegal vote, and it probably goes on everywhere, but no one seems to address this.

Sorry, didn't mean to get into such a tirade.
