Do you think Clear Channel is feeling the heat?

Jackson signing on as radio talk show host

March 31, 2004

BY ROBERT FEDER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

Clear Channel Radio, perpetually under fire for everything from its conservative politics to its rampant consolidation, has signed one of its most outspoken critics -- the Rev. Jesse Jackson -- to host a live national talk show from Chicago, starting this weekend.

"Keep Hope Alive," a call-in show focusing on "issues of cultural, political and religious significance," will air from 7 to 8 a.m. Sundays on WGCI-AM (1390) and on other Clear Channel stations in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Detroit and Norfolk, Va.

2. Troubling but interesting. . .
. . .is the fact that Clear Channel controls a lot of urban radio, however they have not been able to use it to promote * in the Black community.

4. Great news! Jesse will know just how to preach to the unconverted
Clear Channel is a BUSINESS. They make money by selling more and more listeners to advertisers who pay higher fees for bigger audiences.

This report is proof Clear Channel wants some of the new radio talk audience Air America is creating. They are competing for a share of that audience by offering it what it wants to hear.

This move is akin to what Air America did when it signed Hannity's partner Allen Colmes (Fox "News)" for the late night slot.

I don't think either Jackson or Colmes will change their views just because they're appearing in new venues. On the contrary: they're just fishing for listeners in new waters.

8. If they're so profit-minded, why did they drop Stern & Dixie Chicks?

11. Good point. I haven't seen any statistics, but the potential Air America...

... audience must be HUGE compared to the legions of established fans of Stern and the Dixie Chicks. After all, a MAJORITY voted for Al Gore, and their options for listening to talk radio they'd agree with currently are very limited.
