Al Gore has bought Newsworld International...to be a liberal TV station
Kathleen Petty on CBC Newsworld says Al Gore has bought Newsworld International....She just interviewed Joe Hagan, of the New York Observer, who says that Gore himself has said nothing about this, but partners and friends of Gore, have told reporters, off the record that it will be a youth oriented public affairs and news channel...Perhaps this is old news, but I'm passing it along for what it's worth....

P.S...There is no link...It was just said live on CBC Newsworld...

1. Please let it have
real reporters who actually go out and find out what is happening in the world.

3. why couldn't he buy another outfit...
... I'll sure miss newsworld International. It was a nice alternative to the networks in the States...

I know it's a great thing if we get a liberal TV station... but still... too bad He couldn't have bought Fox or MSNBC or something...

6. Probably that was all that was available
Perhaps you can prevail on your cable companies to allow CBC Newsworld into the States and you will see what we see here....Newsworld International is separate and for the foreign market, I guess...I've never seen it.

5. Instead of gearing to youth - I wish he'd hire Walter Cronkite as anchor!
Wanna compare credibility between Cronkite and FAUX?

8. Link and story!! Channel 103 VTV!!
<http://www.nyobserver.com/pages/frontpage5.asp#>

Suddenly, in New York, you can find Mr. Franken on WLIB 1190 AM. It may not be the FAN, but it?s there. And Mr. Gore?s NWI will be on Time Warner Digital Cable, Channel 103?a long way from Hannity and Colmes, but a signal nevertheless.

For a time, Mr. Gore?s TV channel will maintain its current programming, for which there appears to be a very, very small market. NWI has carriage in about 20 million homes, and packages "foreign newscasts originally broadcast in countries such as Germany, Japan, Canada and the European community," according to its Web site. Currently, Newsworld is a bit like something Bill Murray would flip on in the hotel in Lost in Translation: a two-minute dialogue-free video essay on squirrels, followed by the news about a freak rotating-door accident in a Tokyo shopping mall.

Sources close to Mr. Gore insisted that his new cable network wouldn?t be a liberal answer to Fox News, as some had reported and even hoped. But everyone seemed to agree that the channel would be a 24-hour news, documentary and public-affairs channel geared toward kids in their 20?s, with a scrappy, Dogme 95 news philosophy that would arm kids with cheap digital cameras and empower them to do an end run around the big media. As The Observer reported last year, Mr. Gore?s principal business partner, Mr. Hyatt, purchased a Web site called V.tv from the .tv Corporation in April of 2003, prompting speculation that Mr. Gore?s channel would be called VTV. The company?s Web site listed Mr. Hyatt, who teaches business at Stanford University, as the representative of Mr. Gore?s holding company, INDTV L.L.C., registered in Stanford, Calif.

14. Mischaracterization of NWI
It has Canada's national news broadcast, international news on the hour, an author interview program, an in-depth report on some region of the world (usually one that isn't making headlines), as well as news reports from the UK, Russia, Japan, and Mexico, among other places.

The reason it's carried only in 20 million homes is that it's a digital cable channel. Duh. You have to get one of the more expensive packages to receive it.

:grr:

12. Good news! Hope Al will keep the quality up -- I've seen news

stories on NWI that I never saw on American channels, and they were not about accidents with revolving doors in Japan, either, contrary to a post in this thread, though I don't guarantee they never showed strange stories as well as serious ones.

I watched the 7 o'clock news on NWI tonight and they opened with the fracas (Israeli police vs. Palestinians) at the Temple Mount, followed with the bomb found on railway tracks near Toledo, Spain. It'd be my guess that US cable coverage wasn't as complete, even though both stories have elements we should be paying attention to.

13. In an odd way, this is good news.
We got NWI, which aired a lot of CBC shows and news. I hope we can prevail on our providers, whether cable or STV to carry CBC for a balanced comparison. We also get BBC, but the news part is only a half hour everyday.

15. We don't get BBC, we get BBCAmerica, which is owned by
the same company that owns the Discovery Channel, whichever one that is.

I'd love to get the real BBC, because I'm SURE that they don't have back-to-back reruns of Changing Rooms for hours at a time.
