oh, great . . . Fred Phelps is heading my way . . .
remember when the mayor of Nyack NY tried to copy New Paltz and start marrying gays a few weeks back? . . . well, apparently that slimeball Fred Phelps and his gang of thugs heard about it and are planning to do some demonstrating there this weekend . . . Nyack is about ten miles from me, so I think I may head down and join the counter-demonstrators on Sunday . . . if you're anywhere in the New York metropolitan area, think about joining us and letting Phelps know what we think of him

Nyack to be scene of protests Sunday–Monday
Pro and anti gay rights demonstrations planned

Hundreds of demonstrators are expected to gather in Nyack this weekend for a series of protests both opposed to and in support of a variety of gay rights issues.

The demonstrations, which both sides say should be peaceful, will nevertheless be under the watchful eye of local police, who have been advised of the events and plan to have a presence at the Sunday evening and Monday morning gatherings.

The two events have both been triggered by the announced arrival of right-wing religious leader Rev. Fred Phelps of Topeka, Kansas, who has devoted his Baptist ministry to condemning homosexuality throughout the United States. Phelps says he selected Nyack as a focus of his current nationwide tour because he views the riverfront village as “the satanic axis of sodomites,” which must be purged of its gay supportive tendencies.

The particular targets of the minister’s wrath are Nyack Mayor John Shields, who recently applied for a marriage permit to wed his partner Robert Streams; and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, which last year voted to become a reconciling congregation, fully accepting of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members at all levels.

3. oooh, the Canada-hater
He said my entire country was going to burn in hell for its sins (namely, supporting same-sex marriage).

Now he's turning his attention to Nyack, is he? Give him a loud boo from me!

5. If you happen to encounter Phred, tell him he's welcome to come to
Snug Harbor, Oklahoma, just a couple miles north of Wagoner where there are a few folks who would like to engage him in a high caliber debate.

7. I was a proud anti-phelps demonstrator in Boise Idaho!
Probably one of the better more personally satisfying things I've been a part of in a long time.

8. Here's what we did!
I live in Ferndale Michigan. Phelp's people came here to picket a number of churches because they refused to support an anti-gay city council resolution.

In a wonderful and powerful piece of political theater, protesters quietly followed them wherever they went in town, carrying brooms. Wherever they stood, the protesters came behind them and swept the sidewalks, symbolically cleaning their filth from our community.

It was a tactic that got great sympathetic news coverage, and really got under the homophobe's skin!

14. At first I didn't believe it when gay friends told me ...
...
those who protest the loudest about "dirty fags" are often themselves homosexuals in denial.
But I've changed my mind -- before I heard of Fred -- but if there's any doubt left fred will remove it.

I do believe that after a day of rightous denounciation of gays, Fred goes home, climbes atop his lovely wife and in his vivid imagination, he's getting rammed by, say, George Michael. Or George Michael and The Rock, at the same time.

someone fotoshop that for me, wouldja? Love to take that down to the counterdemo.

15. A few years ago...
...when my wife and I lived in an apartment, I went for an early Sunday morning bike ride. When I got back, Phelps and his klan were standing in front of my apartments. They were waving their lovely signs at the Baptist church across the street.

It was at that moment that I truly understood the word surreal.
