McCain slams GOP - Says they've gone astray on several issues
http://news.bostonherald.com/election2004/view.bg?articleid=1611

WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain yesterday unleashed an attack on his own party, saying the GOP is ``astray'' on key issues and criticizing President Bush on the war in Iraq.

"I believe my party has gone astray,'' McCain said, criticizing GOP stands on environmental and minority issues.

`I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have no problems with it, in their views and their philosophy,'' he said. ``But I also feel the Republican Party can be brought back to the principles I articulated before.'' (More in link)

All I can say is DAMN!!

5. Really!
He will always have my admiration for saying (paraphrasing here) during the 200 primaries, "I felt much safer in that POW camp, knowing George Bush was patrolling the Texas coast."

3. Anyone doubt now ...
... that he wants VP. "The Democratic Party is a fine party and I have no problem with it" HELLO.

(By the way, I am not saying I want him as VP. I have mixed feelings about the dude.)

9. He could be a good VP
The problem is how does he vote on tie-breaking votes and what happens if something happens to Kerry. McCain says he doesn't want it anyway.

I am not saying I am for or against this, but that is the way I see it.

4. Could we trade Zell for McCain?
It looks like he is trying for a spot in the Kerry Administration if not the VP spot itself.... How interesting would a 'mixed marrage' ticket of Dem/Repub be for voters? Even more interesting is how hard would it be to work for a Kerry/McCain combo?

39. Why on earth would you want a Bush team member on our ticket???
He has supported Bush every step of the way. He IS a neocon! He just plays the role of a moderate. Are you going to let them con you again? Remember neocon Joe Lieberman on the ticket? Why do you want to put another one on???

He fully supports Bush, these are just BS words. Don't be suckered again! How many times can McCain suck you in?

left/center/center-right. Honest conservatives that care about the country's future more than some ideological agenda have to consider their loyalties right now.

I left the republican Fiasco because of what they did to you in SC. That is what opened up my eyes. While you are at it bring along other moderates that are going to be destroyed anyway if they stay. Come on over, Chayfee, Collins, Snow, and even Specter who they have already started targeting.

McCain's a real conservative...he's not Trent Lott or Tom DeLay. He's using common sense through all this--something the neocon right doesn't use.

He spoke up a couple of times against Bush and in stood up for Kerry and the Democratic Party.

He is one of the only Republicans I respect (besides Richard Clarke).

19. The only time I voted was for a republican
2000 primary for McCain.

I don't agree with all his views, I think he is too far right. However he is sane which says a lot these days.

I don't think he should switch parties, we need a multiparty system, the republican party needs to be saved from this neocon nightmare.

I wouldn't mind a split ticket though. Kerry/McCain as a Dem/Rep fighting to take our country back from the madmen.

40. Admittedly, McCain's remarks were from April 1st
But he pronounced them at a public meeting which I think blows away any theories that it was an April Fool's "gotcha".

The FReeps are pissed as hell so I don't think they see it as an April Fool's either.

46. it's just kinda surprising
based on his fundamental policy differences with democrats (i.e., war is good, cutting taxes is always good . . . etc).

maybe it says more about what's become of the democratic party lately, as compared to mr. mccain.

And telling us what a great leader Shrub is. Now that the emperor has stumbled, McCain takes some shots. Big deal. We need people who don't blow with the wind. McCain lost his vertabrae a long time ago.

37. John won't jump. He personally has too much to lose.
He's Chairman on quite a few IMPORTANT Committees. If he jumped ship, he'd lose that power. I happen to think he's great just where he is. He has the power to get things out of committee where the minority does not. Normal people on both sides listen to him, and he gets a lot of TV face time because of being a Sr. Senator an, yes, being a Republican.

Stay where you are John, but KEEP TALKING!

42. McCain is a Republican
and I don't want him anywhere near us. Just yesterday, he voted to NOT allow a vote on increasing the minimum wage, overtime, and extending unemployment compensation. So did my two Senators, Specter and Santorum. These guys suck.

When Senator Byrd was honored on the Floor of the Senate for his 17,000th vote yesterday, only ONE Republican made a tribute. It was Senator Mike DeWine from Ohio. And I figure he was just trying to cover his butt for the Fall elections.

43. A Canadian POV
As an outsider looking in thru the fog of America, I think Kerry needs to be joined at the hip with someone that is respected both inside and outside America to have any reasonable chance in our lifetime of reversing the damage by *. Even if you exclude the outer world, America itself is deeply divided and those wounds won't heal quickly. Take a page from Manadela ... when he overwhelming won the first all-races elections in 1994 who did he appoint as his VP? F.W. FW de Klerk, the former prime minister of SA.
