How low does an incumbent president have to fall in the polls, before

he decides not to run? How low did Lyndon B. Johnson go in the polls before making this decision?

He had strong rivals in the party. He hated Bobby Kennedy, and he pretty much knew Bobby would challenge him in the primaries. Bobby would have beaten him.

LBJ always said he did not like being President. He had more power in the senate.

But things were different overall. Democrats were strong then.

until after the New Hampshire primary when McCarthy showed unexpected strength. I believe LBJ actually came in first, but he decided not to run. He was, in all fairness, quite worn out emotionally and physically from the demands of the job. He knew he was extremely unpopular, especially with young people, and it bothered him terribly. I think he honestly thought pursuing the war in Vietnam was the right thing to do, and was genuinely hurt that so many citizens opposed it.

It's important to understand that LBJ didn't simply drop out because his poll numbers had dropped to some particular point.

There is probably nearly zero chance that Bush won't run again. He has the unwavering support of the extreme right. He, and those around him, seem singularly disconnected from reality. It's well known that he does not read newspapers or watch any news -- everything he knows is filtered through people who have it in their own interest to make sure he learns only what they want him to learn.

And, as I've said many times here, those currently in power came to power in a coup, and they will not willingly give that up. They will do all possible to assure "re-election". We need to do all possible to see that doesn't happen.

Bush will cancel or invalidate the election rather than step down.
