"Hey Nick, your Mom's here" soldiers mom goes to Iraq
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 07:51 AM by Mari333
Susan Galleymore had traveled 7,472 miles from Alameda to search for her son in Iraq and was close to finding him. The Army Ranger had urged her not to come. He wouldn't even tell her where he was stationed. It was too dangerous, he said.

But on Feb. 1, seven days after she arrived, the 48-year-old woman was outside the U.S. military base where her son might be. Her car idled among a dozen waiting to be inspected. She stepped out, her face covered in a borrowed hijab, the traditional head scarf worn by Muslim women. She approached a gun- toting U.S. soldier as he inspected a car.

"I'm coming up behind you, I mean you no harm," she said. She pulled out her U.S. passport. "I have business here and I want to speak to your sergeant."

2. But now tons of mothers and fathers are thinking of going
Let the BFEE put that in their pipes and smoke. Parents are mad as hell. Time for these kids to come home, now.
If anything, this will snowball and morph into contigents of parents who just go and seek their kids, who have been snatched from us like cannon fodder to use for the fraudulent war.
If she can do it, anyone can.
a brave woman, a real parent imho.

15. Both are important...
If anything, this will snowball and morph into contigents of parents who just go and seek their kids, who have been snatched from us like cannon fodder to use for the fraudulent war.

That plan was a good one for that mom. It was what she needed to do.

Each of us has a role to play and going to Iraq is not what every parent needs to do. The soldiers need those of us who are here at home fighting for them also. Both kinds of parents are very needed and very important.

7. Jym Mooney
I came across Mr. Mooney's song awhile ago, can hardly bear to read the lyrics -

As a mother of 3 sons, the youngest 20 and 16 -

reading Susan Galleymore's story -

remembering the song -

through tears -

Here's the lyrics:

8. I just sent those lyrics to Susan.
God, I wish I could get all the mothers and fathers together whose kids are over there and just go over and grab all our kids and stand up to the military and say enough is fucking enough.

9. This is the first time I've heard of this
If it happened in February, isn't it amazing that the media didn't report it? Maybe THIS is the type of person who should be making the talk show rounds instead of administration plants sent by bush* and company.

13. We have all been fighting for months now and the media ignores us
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 09:25 AM by Mari333
we get a little here and there , but mostly the networks where people get the news, just ignore the rising anger of the military parents, mothers, and families. I got a little press , but mostly the networks media are ignoring everything the military families are doing, and what they are going through.
This woman is brave, she put herself on the line with everyone, to see her son. One thing the military does, it tries to get anti war family members to pipe down. I know, its happened to me plenty.
Luckily, Im 52 years old and no one, and I mean no one, tells me what to do, especially a bunch of suits.
http://www.mfso.org
and Nancy Lessin is working tirelessly to get the word out at military families speak out.
Its a nightmare.

10. Yes
I saw a poll of military families on TV (either CNN or MSNBC) where a majority are now against the Iraq war. The story went on about a soldier that just returned from Iraq that said he is going to work hard for the Kerry campaign and is changing his party affiliation from republican to independent.

12. Military Families Speak Out
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 09:20 AM by Amerpie
I live and organize right outside of Ft. Bragg, NC. I know of several wives and parents of GIs who have traveled to Iraq to see the conditions for themselves. Medea Benjamin's group, Global Exchange organizes these trips frequently.

I first learned about her through a group I'm active in called Military Families Speak Out

I encourage any military moms to contact Susan Galleymore at motherspeak@motherspeak.org. Susan says "I seek a range of worldviews and opinions and interviews will not exceed 1,200 words; photos of mothers and children included where possible. You may also interview anonymously if you prefer. All interviews will be posted on the Mother Speak website. If you are interested in volunteering for an interview, or if you know others mothers who may be interested, contact MotherSpeak."

Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 09:31 AM by Mari333
=) and welcome to DU!! PM me about those trips to Iraq. My husband wants to see his son, my stepson. He said hell yes we need to see Michael.
In the meantime, thanks for all the work you do. I work from a small town in Michigan, where Im hiding from the Bushbots who dont like my stance on the "war".
If it wasnt for DU and MFSO, I would be insane by now. and Susan.
My story is already on her site. Agreed, tons of mothers and loved ones need to write to her and not be afraid to tell their stories.
