13. NO president should be connected with those who say "Screw them"
when confronted with the deaths of Americans.

3. I Think Kos's Statement Was Unwise
primarily because we don't know who the mercenaries were or what their mission was. It's a result of the secrecy of war and the duplicity of our government.

Recruits are serving their country, and are not fighting by their own choice. Mercenaries and contractors are different -- they have a choice. If their mission was ignoble, injurious, or involved war crimes, sympathy is not appropriate (from my point of view). The local populace obviously thought so, but they could be wrong.

Kos's mistake was jumping to a conclusion that may have been unwarranted. We may be damned if we do assume, and damned if we don't. Under these circumstances, silence is preferable.

4. Well said, Pete
We MUST rise above the level of that kind of discourse or else we run the risk of becoming like those we abhor. I can empathize with Kos' reaction but in circumstances like these he needs to think really hard before he responds.

5. I agree.
We do ourselves a disservice when we start frothing at the mouth and hurling invective. Sure, it is certainly tempting to do so. Terrible times seem to call for outrageous reactions. I do it myself sometimes. Nobody is perfect. We need to help rein one another in.

Every time I visit freeper-land they are saying that such-and-so and his cousin should be killed, murdered, or maimed. It's repulsive. Do we want to act like that?

7. Kerry has a right to link to whatever site he chooses.
He has a right to unlink from any of them as well.

I am truly upset about this, and I don't pretend otherwise. It represents a pattern of distancing oneself from......well, finish the sentence I guess.

Sometimes it is better to stand up for someone and say that though you disagree, they have the right to say it.

I am reading some of the comments there, and people are very upset. I feel like this is very serious, because Kos is popular. I don't agree with him all the time, and certainly not with all the bloggers who post there. I don't have to do that.

I feel like a few other sites will probably have offensive stuff as well. There has to be a time to stand up. He could have let this go by. He must have been pressured. I won't go back to the Kerry site for a while.

9. What really sticks in my craw
is that this thing was inflamed by Glenn Reynolds and Charles Johnson, a couple of prime-cut assholes. Reynolds used to link to the Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler fer chrissakes, and ignored entreaties to delink. It wasn't until that death threat incident that the prof saw fit to distance himself. And the proprietor of Little Green Footballs has no fucking business wailing about incivility and hate from anyone.

10. Yes, it is being inflamed by the right wing.
The Democrats are falling in line.

12. And this site is inflaming it as well. Democrats should not go along.
Look at the people they are targeting here. They have gotten them to pull ads off Kos. There are not enough of us to stop them if our Democratic leaders cave in to this.

This makes me sad, and not very hopeful for the election's outcome. Apparently they still define the issues totally.

This is a right wing attack that should not have been taken up by our party. Kos should not have said it, but he does not deserve to be destroyed for a statement.

I am very upset for all of us. They are defining us and so enjoying it.

14. Eh
The guy's a weedy little opportunist. Look what he left mixed into his harrumphing screed:
I started my Fried Man a bit more than 2 months ago. In that time I got about 12,000 unique visitors. Today I got almost 10,000 additional visitors taking me up well past 21,000. If I could do that consistently I would be the 16th blog by traffic in the Truth Laid Bear Ecosystem, right ahead of Pandagon. My Ecosystem ranking jumped from 1568 (with 45 inbound links) to 662 (with 112 inbound links). I'm the top meme on Blogdex, I got 185 comments so far and 18 links that left track backs. I feel like Charles Johnson or Kevin Drum.

...

There is a danger, however, that this will lead to retaliation. If I start selling blog ads next week will Kos's readers organize against me? Or perhaps more intelligently, will they start a campaign to get rid of Glenn Reynolds's advertisers? I hope not and even if they do I don't think it will be effective unless the target of the campaign gets seriously out of line with his posts like Kos did. I don't plan to do that and I hope Glenn Reynolds doesn't either.

Too giddy and dumb to keep his nickel and dime ambitions to himself, these tawdry interludes are right in the midst of his I'm-mad-as-hell-at-Kos showboating. Transparent little twerp.

8. Everyone has a choice and shit will still happen.
The higher ground is always best in hindsight, but that's hard to remember when lower roads are accessible in the present.

11. Another site linked there is controversial on the topic as well.
It is not being very politically correct on the Iraq issue, and is attracting a lot of angry right wingers.
