Appearing on the cover of Vanity Fair, and in conversation with Oprah Winfrey, Rice seemed a woman of private grace. She was singular in her dedication to the job, aside from her 5 a.m. devotion to her treadmill, and her seeking solace in Brahms.

To Oprah she confirmed that the president calls her Mother Hen, "but I think he means it affectionately." Her father and grandfathers were Presbyterian ministers. She likes football. She is fond of piecing together jigsaw puzzles with the Bushes at Camp David. Everyone refers to her as Condi. She calls herself Dr. Rice.

Rice offered slight insights into her role as security adviser, which is meant to be marked by its independence from both the departments of state and defence.

"I'm just always watching out for him," she said of the prez, "and making sure he's got the right papers and, you know, that he's going to say exactly what he wants to say."

That's a quote worth reading twice.

The president is a fast eater. "You know, we're all learning to keep up, because if you're not careful, he'll be on dessert and you're still eating the salad."
